Rain rot remedies?

I just clicked using Firefox and it was ok. Basically he goes over the chemistry of bleach, how it works and how to use it. Calls Vetericyn as dilute bleach.

I had a horse that would get rain rot in hind pasterns, the croup and the groin. I washed him with butadiene scrub, then filled up a spray bottle with dilute bleach, sprayed and allowed the solution to dry on the hair in the white stockings. Since he was a chestnut, in the body I used butadiene solution and let it dry on the body.

Cleared things up.

It is warm in my part of the world right now BUT for winter weather or times you don’t want to add moisture, I’ve used the generic version of Goldbond Medicated Powder https://www.target.com/p/gold-bond-medicated-powder-10oz-46/-/A-11148353?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Health+Beauty+Shopping&adgroup=SC_Health+Beauty&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9006810&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoeuB1s-y2wIVj56fCh0OZQ0-EAQYAiABEgJgbfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Good for scratches and rain rot. Since changing my horses diet, I haven’t had any issues with either. However, it’s been so wet around here I just noticed a couple tiny spots on my OTTB’s back.

Of course, the powder is white so keep that in mind if you have anything but a grey horse.

Gold bond powder or iodine both work well to get rid of rain rot. My horse’s have rain rot on and off all summer. Both have scratches on hind legs I’m putting iodine on it.

It’s part of summer got to deal with skin issues.

Chlorhexidrine shampoo, then a 50/50 dilution of Clorox sprayed on. If there are scabs, warm damp towels in the microwave, drape them over the affected areas and let the horse stand until they are cool. Then remove as much of the softened scabs as the horse will allow with one of those silicon fingered curry combs.

My horses were covered in it, but MTG has been working wonders. It makes the scabs fall off really easily and helps the hair come back. I put it on in the evenings to avoid the oil burning then in the sun (as if we’ve had much sun )

I’ve been using the Fungasol ( absorbine) ointment. Looks like vaseline but smells medicinally. It greasy and gross attracts dirt, but i swear it got rid of his scratches overnight. and did the same for some weird patches of raincoat/gnat bites. I just bath him with Lucky Braids all in one shampoo, wait for him to dry in the sun, and then slather it on. I was impressed with how well it worked.
