Re-riders: First Lesson Back

Thanks, everyone! I’m stretching away and have ibuprofen handy… and whiskey.

We taught many beginner adults and re-riders and we longed them the first lesson or three for a bit, then let them wander around more than do real work.
There is so much you can do that is fun to start riding that is not too demanding of unused muscles.
Even those that were naturally catching on right away, or had obvious previously learned skills, were not put thru their paces to the point of getting anyone into being unable to walk off.

Good to be warned that may happen and if so, try to avoid that the first few rides.

I expect your instructor will go easy on.
Warming up beforehand should be plenty to keep from getting sore, spirits of the distilled kind optional, of course.

Being SO sore.

And seriously having very little endurance in the saddle.

I’m actually looking at returning to the saddle soon after about a year and a half off. The longest I was away was four years.

My advice would be to PAY ATTENTION. Truthfully, I was so giddy to just be riding (which was great!) that I overlooked the fact that I didn’t really click with the trainer (yes, sometimes you can tell at the first lesson) and the barn didn’t really suit my style. I complained about it for much longer than I should have but because I was SO relieved/happy to be riding again I was afraid to speak up and find a situation that I was better suited for – and cheaper.

So, it’s just been trail rides for me for the last year or so but now that I’m ready to ride again I’m more than okay with going with my gut!

Have fun OP!
