Why complicate it? The door bar holders are perfect for this. They hold a 2x4 nicely, but the board is removable for whenever you need it to not be there. You could even use a 2x6 or 2x8 if you want something taller. No need to reinvent the wheel
I don’t know what a “door bar holder” is, but I don’t think my 70+ year old pig barn has those. But I get your point. I was trying to think of something tall that had some give to it - to keep my elderly ponies from tripping, or if they stepped on it, their hoof wouldn’t end up at some awkward angle, because the rubber would fold over.
What about flexible vinyl lawn edging fastened between 2 2 x 4’s?
I linked what I’m talking about earlier in this thread.
If you install something with enough give to fold flat to the floor, it’ll (pretty quickly, ime) just be folded over all the time, negating the fact you have anything there at all.
I’ve had to pull my thresholds every now and then. Sometimes a horse with an acute cellulitis just struggles to flex the limb enough to step over. That’s the beauty of having a removable bar. Any horse that’s not saying “my leg feels broken” can step over a 2x4…hell, Texarkana’s horses navigate an 18" step without batting an eye.

Sometimes I fail at reading comprehension.
And sorry @TheJenners , didn’t mean to derail your thread!
@Simkie is right. Everyone negotiates my massive step into the stalls just fine. And we’re talking about a motley crew that includes two clumsy, arthritic oldsters (33 and 25), as well as two small donkeys who have no problems with it despite it being higher than their knees. My younger mare likes to gallop in and out of the stalls over that ledge, just to give me extra heart attacks.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d never recommend an 18” step into stalls. I’m stuck with it because it’s a 100 year old barn and there’s no easy way to remove it.
But in the context of the situation of putting a board down in the threshold of an opening to prevent bedding loss, it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.
No way, totally cool! This is how we all learn
At the last place the horses had to step up 6" to go in the stall. They all 3 did fine.
At the last place the horses had to step up 6" to go in the stall. They all 3 did fine. It also did good with keeping the bedding in the stalls (other than what they drug out dragging their feet)
