Real talk: What's everyone paying these days?

I get chiro but only because the horse chiro includes the rider. My last two pairs of shoes came from the Skechers outlet.

That’s amazing that the chiro includes both!!

That’s my observation, too, and this fact, among others, hurts the future of horses in this country.

Here is my bill from last week. 3 classes plus a schooling round. Not including grooming, training, and trainer splits (for supplies).

OP was asking about trainer fees, not entries. (But as a previous poster said, I’m glad I do eventing and dressage; I definitely could not afford hunter/jumper show entries!)

Oops :woman_facepalming:t3: I was just floored by this cost so thought to share on this thread. It was a wonderful but financially painful two weeks. Lol.

I can’t totally read this but did you pay $42 for the convenience of using a credit card?

That’s pretty standard in CC fees… looks to be about 2.5-3% for the total amount minus tax.
Like most shows, if you’re paying with check, usually it will be adjusted/removed by request.

I would have my checkbook out so fast :stuck_out_tongue:

Reading this while having a cup of tea at home before I head out to my horses’ physio appointment that I had to take the morning off of work for… I cannot justify the cost of a starbucks so must have the tea made at home.

This month alone she will have had chiro, physio, and massage. Plus last month she had injections and 3 rounds of shockwave (hind suspensory injury :grimacing: )

I cannot respond to the actual question of the thread because I’m not HJ and don’t have a horse in training (or showing…) but I’ll just leave some comparisons here for reference…

Outdoor board: $500 (does not include extras like blanketing, meds, etc but I can usually call in favours if I really need it). Facility has a heated indoor arena and a decent outdoor
Lessons: $60 (45 mins) I need to do all my own grooming/tacking up etc but if I am running late I can usually get someone to bring in my horse for me to save that step

Showing: The barn family usually bands together for shows, sharing transport, tack stalls, etc and we only show locally so no hotel fees etc for us… typically dressage show likely runs around $500 all things considered for a weekend. We all help each other out at the show with grooming, videoing, etc.

Body work (assumes it’s not initial assessment):
chiro (my vet does this): $160 for approx 30 mins
physio (certified human physio, also treats horses): $75 for 45 mins
massage (certified human physio, also treats horses): $60 for approx 30-45 mins, always takes as long as it takes - never rushed.

I’m in the Canadian prairies, we are all adult ammies in my barn who just love horses and the community here.

Horse shows literally are the only reason I begrudgingly ordered checkbooks awhile back :woman_facepalming:

That said, last year I paid primarily via credit card, and between that and my board bills (which thankfully are all done via quickbooks), I had enough reward points to pay for both me and the SO’s airfare for vacation.

So there is a perk to paying by credit card if you choose to :woman_shrugging:

Holy trainer split - $700?!

Here’s mine from last week, since we’re going full transparency. (Horse is a jumper, so only did two classes.)

Yep. I’be never gone into the show office to pay :woman_facepalming:t3: I guess since I’ve always checked out online on Showgrounds Live, it’s never occurred to me. At least I get cash back, I guess…

The split made me 🫠 but the second week it was only $300. I’m guessing lots of shavings and hay week one that got used week two.

How many horses, out of curiosity, and what is your stall set-up like? (E.g., my bill above was 7 horses with two set-up stalls, two grooming stalls, and a feed/junk stall.)

Interesting. If we take 7 horses we usually only have 2 extra grooming/storage stalls (maybe 3 if the venue is tight on space). But we don’t do any fancy setup beyond a banner and a couple of curtains. We all pitch in and help out and don’t have a dedicated groom. If enough people want they’ll go in together and hire a freelance groom but it’s not required.

I really don’t have any desire to show two weeks a month, but if I did I’m in category “A” for both questions. I haul myself, do my own day care and grooming. The trainer’s day fee covers any needed lunging, pro rides, lessons, coaching, etc. She prefers it that way to simplify billing and to help make sure everyone gets the support that works best instead of opting out of things due to cost.

We just always have the two front stalls that we remove to make space for trunks, furniture, mulch, plants, etc. It’s excessive, but it’s nice to have a comfortable place to sit and relax on long show days.

There were 10 horses the first week and 14 the second. 3 grooming, a dressing room, and feed room. Set up is outside the stall area so not included.

Then I think maybe your trainer made a mistake on the splits? Looks like stalls are $400(?), so $2k for the extras, divided by 10 horses, is $200. There’s no way your horse used $600 worth of hay and shavings. I don’t know, I’m pretty tolerant of high bills but that definitely would’ve prompted some investigation on my part.

You have actually discovered the silver lining to horse expenses! I’m impressed and will be implementing this mindset immediately
