Realistic horse thermometer? Would you buy it?
I have a horse with terrible anhidrosis in the summers. I could see this being a useful tool to monitor his temperature more closely and make sure he is not overheating while working. But otherwise, agree with the others that is seems a bit unnecessary.
My horse too has had anhidrosis which fortunately I have been able to manage (knock on wood-we are coming up on another summer in FL) with early treatment with Chinese herbs. Just started him again on them last week. It still would be unlikely that I would purchase this thermometer. It seems like more work than a rectal. My digital human thermometer gives me the same readings as the vets and it is easy.

I agree with some of the above that it seems difficult to make a bit-like device accurate. Also, I had to stop buying copper roller bits for my guy because he would destroy them, so you would have to convince me that it was super sturdy.

What I have always wanted is to get the RFID with the thermosensor (LifeChip or somesuch). Imagine just waving a wand over each horse at stall check and immediately knowing which one has a slight fever (at least accurate enough to know you need to follow up with a normal thermometer). Chip is 17$, get your vet to implant it (same as any RFID). The real cost is in the reader, but might be able to do something cheap with a phone that has NFC/RFID? (And once you’ve got the data on your phone, exporting it to a spreadsheet and seeing, e.g., lovely trend lines and long term data.) One of these days…
