Recommend a New Cat Litter?

Hmmm. I used to use the woodstove pine pellets and just dump the lot in my (non-vegetable garden) compost pile out back. The dust would get tracked around the house, though.

I’ve been using the Tidy Cat clumping formula since my cat got sick because she pees 10 times a day. I scoop it 2-3 times a week and about once a month change all the litter out of the pan.

Do you think the Swheat Scoop would work for this situation? I’d prefer not to flush it but just dump the pan outside every few days. She has a covered litter box which keeps the odor down a lot.

If my cat were urinating 10 times a day, I’d be scooping that box daily, if not twice a day. Not 2-3 times a week.

I have two cats that mostly share one box and it’s cleaned morning & night. The two combined don’t pee 10x/day.

Maybe adding actual arm and hammer baking soda to your favorite litter could help with htose who have odor problems. I add it to my laundry.

I do use their litter product. Kitty has kidney problems and doesn’t pee, she voids, kind of like cutting the bottom of a water ballon it just blasts out. So clump ability is a plus.

This. By adding a little A&H powder to my Swheat Scoop every 2-3 days, there is ZERO smell. And i have 2 cats using only 1 litterbox.
The only time I smell anything is when one of my 2 cats decides to just poop on the top of the litter and then jump out, for some strange reason. It’s only an occasional thing, but it’s very bizarre, LOL. Makes me wonder if maybe they got startled right when they were finishing their “business” and just bolted out of the box.

Yes, it is somewhat dusty. But I have the box in the WC with the door closed (kitty door installed), so the dust stays in the WC, and really, it would not be noticeable at all if I cleaned in there a bit more diligently (right now i clean up in there probably about once every 10-14 days). :stuck_out_tongue:

I feel SO much better not bagging & tossing the clumps anymore. Being able to just scoop & flush has been fantastic - that “pro” definitely outweighs the small “con” of the dust.

I used A&H also, it improves the smell of my bathroom, using World’s Best. Am planning to try the walnut-based litter soon too.

Hey!

I was looking on the weekend and found the Arm and Hammer. A previous poster mentioned it isn’t actually clay; however, when I read the box, I couldn’t actually find out what it was made of. I really don’t want to go back to clay if I don’t have to b/c of my one cat’s allergies to it.

Also, Cat Attract…is that one found in Canada?

Will need litter soon so I’m also going to look for the BB walnut at PetSmart when it’s time. I’ve been using up the current bag of Fresh4Life, but adding A&H to it when I clean it up - it’s helping thank goodness!

Thanks everyone!

I have to agree with the above poster that 2-3 times a week for an adult cat that urinates up to 10 times a day is a bit …relaxed to say the least. I have one cat, pees and poos 1-2 times a day and I clean it every. single. morning. I dont want him stepping in dirty litter then putting his paws on my face, (tables when I am not looking) etc.

Also if the cats have a build up of “dirty litter” up under their nails and they scratch you, you can get Cat Scratch Fever. Its when they deposit (unknown to them) feces and dried urine in your cuts.

ETA also, if you clean the box more often you will not have to go though so much litter, since you are ‘picking’ out the dirty instead of stripping the whole lot. Like doing a stall; you remove the dirty each day and replace with a bag of shavings or a bale of straw but when you strip the stall you have to put in 8-10 bags or bales in.

Our Petsmart sells it here in Alberta.

Okay, review of the Blue Buffalo walnut litter after about a week:

Smell is good. Perhaps better than clay.

Clumping is okay. Does not clump as hard as clay, so requires fairly careful scooping. Does leave more crumbs, even with careful scooping. Quite a bit lighter than clay, which is nice.

Cats are using it well. One 17 lb bag filled my large sterilite tub/litter box nicely. After about a week of use and scooping, there is still a nice depth. I expect I will have to start adding more litter this next week. This is about how fast I go through clay as well (40 lbs bag of clay approx = depth of 17 lbs of walnut)

Seems to have come with giant spiders. Have seen several in the box along with several near the box. Um?

Overall, it’s something I am willing to pursue further to avoid the ecological effects tied to clay litter and avoid the giant weight of clay litter. The spider issue is concerning.

Ugh. Spiders? That’s gross! Did you call the manufacturer or anything? I’d have concerns with that too. I have a 100+year old house and I battle spiders all the time much less having them shipped in with litter! Walnuts. Huh. I have 4 walnut tree’s in my yard…maybe I’ll get in the business lol!

I found Arm and Hammer Multicat All Natural Corncob Fiber Cllumping litter. Bought 2 6 kg bags and put it in on the weekend. So far, so good. It’s scented I believe, but after the last kind which made my eyes water, I’m okay with it. It seems to clump okay from the small amount I’ve picked out so far. If it keeps it up, we may have a winner!

I’ve never had spiders in my BB. And I bet I’ve bought 20 bags. So sorry you picked the bag with the bonus freebies. :frowning:

Okay, latest review of the Blue Buffalo Walnut litter:

No spiders in the new bag.

It does very well with odor and seems to do very well with dust.

I think it absorbs better than the clay. The pee spots seem smaller and the end product at the end of the week in the trash can is less volume. Also means that less litter is taken out every day, so I have to replenish less litter.

The used litter does seem to attract some fruitflies (not terribly surprising, as it’s a natural product) but I can’t imagine it would be an issue unless you store your dirty litter in the house. I scoop into a trash can that is then stored in the garage until trash day.

I still have half my litter boxes in clay, working through the last of my stock, but I am excited about using the walnut stuff from now on.
