Recommendations for skin and coat supplements

I have no idea if diet plays a part in it, but last year I was keeping a sheepskin tube on the crown of my mare’s bridle because she was basically bald behind her ears (not patchy like hair was rubbing out, just there wasn’t any) and I was concerned she would get rubbed raw. I’ve noticed this year she has not gone bald. The additions to her diet over the past year are: more Vitamin E, like up from 1,000 iu to 4,000 iu; hyaluronic acid + silica (JointX), 2 oz of hemseed oil. She also gets Tri-Amino, but that’s been a longtime staple.

I’m also in south-central TX and the heat has been ridiculous. I also stopped the fly sheet because it was too hot and now with drought, the flies have also died. I’ve always fed Nutrena Pro Force Fuel—he gets 2-½ lb and is fat. He also gets 1 scoop Platinum along with Farriers Formula 2X (½ cup) once a day. He had some weird scaly skin things, nothing major, when I got him but they have been long gone and I"ve never had skin issues with him. He’s also dark bay but hasn’t bleached out, which is interesting because he’s pretty much out 24x7. All of my horses (all OTTBs) have done well on only 1 scoop daily of Platinum—they suggest 2 but I don’t have that kind of money. !

Thank you gradytb. We have had our older horses on LubriSyn for years (my husband and I take it too, as did the dog). We have been debating whether to start her on it, even at her relative youth (early teens).

I am closing in on Omega Horseshine or a flax supplement and you are reinforcing my idea to go to Platinum instead if I am not seeing results from that. Yes, much of this horse’s head is just bald! I’m glad to know she is not the only one and that our horse is better!

I agree and will add it is so much more economical and I have never had it go bad no matter the heat/ humidity. I still have some left from over a year ago and it is just the same as when I opened the bag.

Here are the ingredients in Platinum. I was thinking there is a lot of flax in it and it hasn’t gone bad even in this heat. I forgot to mention that my horse is the shiniest horse I’ve seen! My others were shiny on it too, but it was a little harder to see because they were flea-bitten gray and chestnut. Anyway…I like it because it’s easy and mine have never turned up their noses at it!

You might look at the amount of omega-3 in OHS – other flax supps have less, except I think, Simply Flax. I tried that though, and preferred OHS.

Use a coffee grinder and grind your whole flax. The rats will stop eating your horse’s manure. I tried feeding whole flax and I had the same problem. As soon as I started grinding it again, no rats in the manure.
