Well, I wish there was a source better than a compilation of anecdotes. I am looking for a metanalysis or at least some large, well designed clinical trials. Does anyone know of any? My mare was diagnosed with mild-moderate sprain of lateral collateral ligament 9 months ago by MRI. She has been on stall rest since. We started her under saddle at 5 months at a walk. Adding 5 minutes per session each week. Then added trot after she was re-evaluated when we reached 45 minutes of walk. Trot was added in same way. We are now up to 45 minutes of trot after 30 minutes warm up at walk. She came up lame with a stone bruise in opposite foot so we are treating that for the next few weeks. Goal is to re-evaluate her then start canter then turn out. A long process. I was depressed to learn she may never jump again and may not be able to hunt or do hunter paces because of uneven ground. I am inspired by stories of some horses returning to jumping but want to know more from trials and long term follow up. Any thoughts?
Penny- I do not know of any long term studies out there. I do know that they will be prone to re-injuring going forward. Clinical trials are not really feasible in horse injuries. You may find some information out there, by doing some deep web surfing. My experience has been the European journals tend to have more published articles. Good luck and I hope it works out for your mare.
