Red American Doberman-Update he's 10 months old and huge!

Congrats on your new addition. We have four Dobermans - one each in black, red, fawn and blue - and they are incredible, loyal, intelligent, loving, protective dogs who also have funny quirks like thinking they will melt if ONE raindrop touches them

Three of ours are from the same breeder (not related to each other) and the fourth is a rescue. My oldest female’s full sister/littermate was a guide dog and another full sister/littermate is an International Champion and also a SAR dog. My youngest male’s full sister/littermate just finished her AKC championship. My girls both excelled in obedience when I had the time to do it, which sadly I don’t anymore, both breezed through the WAE testing with flying colors, and both are registered TDI dogs. I haven’t done any of that with the boys since my travel schedule for work and horse shows has picked up over the last few years…the dogs don’t train anymore and they are fine playing around the house!

Anyhow, congrats on your new boy and may you have many happy years with him!

Please tell me you match them to your outfit when you go out for a walk!

Give him time! I have rescued my last two males at around 2yo and they both worried me at first since they were a bit cool. Both of those dogs ended up affectionate to a fault! If they could unzip you and crawl inside they would! They can never be close enough!

Aloof with strangers is correct for a Dobe.

Gassy, yes…Dobes are known for that. Diet does help. Grain free seems to work best for most. I keep Gas-X around at all times in case i suspect bloat (can buy you some time to get to the emerge). I do not feed any people food or treats…just kibble. Still gets carrots and grain off the floor at the farm though. They are as bad as any Lab in that respect…garbage cans. Training a solid “leave it” is very useful. Training in general is a good idea…agree that never letting them get the upper hand is the only way to keep a happy family with Dobes. I also DO NOT let them on the bed.

Mine have all been great with the horses. Also fine with our cat…strange cats are fair game though. Prey drive seems higher in the females but my current male has killed rabbits, squirrels and rats. He has learned this from the Terriers I think.

Your boy is adorable…I’m jealous. Good luck with him

It’s a rough life being a farm dog: http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2535211670043029495HbxvCT

ETA: I’m glad he loves his squeaky toy, but OMG I’m going insane!!! No really, we LOVE him!

Ohhh…lookit the baby dog!!! He is adorable!

Glad he got a clean bill of health from the vet

very cute

Oh, what a vicious, vicious looking killer dog!!!He looks so…threatening…

I sure loved my doberman. RIP Baron, we buried you with your blanket and frisbee.

A huge lap dog that is

Kaiser is doing great. At his 9 month check up he was already 69 pounds! We’re thinking he is pushing 75 lbs right now! He is such a great dog  He’s about the most calm and relaxed puppy I have ever met. Here he is relaxing after a long day on the farm:

Thanks again CoTH for helping me understand Dobies when I first got him

He is adorable!

I’m vacillating between smiling at the absolutely adorable cuteness of that pic & hearing that he’s doing so well, & TOTAL pea-green jealousy!!!

What a wonderful dog and what a wonderful home he has found. I have a huge secret love of Dobe’s. Wonderful and beautiful, how much more could you ask. Enjoy your new addition.

Prepare to be amazed. Especially the red males seem to have a goofy sense of humor (mine was a classic big gallut!) Seems like horse people favor dobies in general, and agreed they are wonderful dogs. Yes they will sit on you, follow you everywhere… they want to be a part of your life, not an accessory. I would say more than aussies they need some formal training, and that training will need to be reinforced occasionally. Great barn dogs, mine never cared that much about livestock after puppyhood, but they vary widely on the amt of prey drive they have. Smartest, best road trip dogs ever. Ive had 5: 2 red males, black male, red bitch, and a black female cross. Fantastic dogs. They have their fair share of health issues, but all of mine except one lived to be btween 12-14. Miss them everyday.

I had a Doberman Grace for years…absolutely the BEST dog!! Super smart, perceptive, and loved my cats. They would snuggle together…she loved her blankets & bed…when it was colder I put a coat on her to go outside.
Her intelligence amazed me:-)

I wouldn’t exactly say that Kaiser’s intelligence has amazed me. I don’t know if it is because he has big shoes to fill because my male Australian Shepherd is a freaky super genius dog, or if he is just a little slower than the average Doberman. He’s fine though, he just takes a little longer to train and has this adorable “What the heck do you want me to do?” face
