Regazzoni Traits

I am looking at purchasing a horse who’s sired by Regazzoni. What are some typical traits he passes down to his offspring?

The mare gets extremely sensitive on her sides and back when she comes into heat. I know other horses (mares) with the same sire and they all seem to have the same issue. Everything else about her is wonderful and she passed the vet exam with flying colors. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!!

Is the mare a hunter or a dressage horse ?

In my experience they are beautiful movers, but spooky and behind the leg.

Regazzoni is the sire of Ragtime, a successful hunter stallion.

Many of Ragtime’s offspring do well in the hunter breeding ring. This 2 year old was the west coast champion of the Sallie B Wheeler National Hunter Breeding Championship last week.

Although he’s not presented as well as he could have been in this video, you get an idea of his type.

I know a dressage mare by Regazzoni; she’s small and compact, and her movement is very similar to her father’s. She’s a nice mare, with a good temperament and yes, the occasional spook. She’s stayed sound through her training in 2nd- 3rd level. An older (70 yrs +) adult amateur owned her and it was a nice match.

I just sold a 2 yr old by Regazzoni, I bought the mare in foal to him. He is beautiful, correct, excellent movement for the hunter ring and showed good potential the 1 time he went through the jump chute. He internalizes pretty badly and could get worked up, but was overall pretty quiet. Had the tendency to be a bit of an asshole, pushy, not much respect for discipline. Although dam is 16.3, the 2 yr old will probably only finish about 16.1.

Overall, I’ve heard they can be quite sensitive and internalize, causing them to be easy to stress out. But I would breed to Regazzoni again, overall I liked the 2 yr old he could just be a bit difficult at times

I have a Regazzoni mare as well, and see Reggie himself at least 3 days a week. Love him! All the offspring I know are all VERY smart, good walk and canter, average trot that develops into really nice trot. Many seem to be on the smaller side, though I do know of a couple pretty tall ones.
My mare is super compact, sensitive, spooky, etc… but the quickest learner I have sat on and willing to work. Wouldn’t have her any other way. I have heard that his offspring don’t do well with the collection, but have experienced the opposite. Best of luck with your new mare!
