Renegade boots VS Easyboot Edge
I am new to boots and just got (and sent back) the Cavallos. They are just so clunky and heavy. Maybe all boots are? I’ve been looking at the Edge and have been very interested in this thread. The renegades are too much $$ (I’m not planning on using boots that long) and look somewhat complicated.

Anybody weigh the different boots to compare?
I totally agree @ the cavallos!

Regarding Renegades customer service - I have bought Renegade and have having problems fitting due to some slight flaring. I have found the customer service has been excellent. We emailed back and forth for a couple of weeks, I always received a response within 24 hours and Gina actually called me to discuss fitting issues.

I love how easy the boots are to get on and off, just hoping I can get the flaring fixed.

I tried the Easyboot Gloves and they did not fit.

small update

Small update- i got my Easyboot Edges, and i cut the 12 mm pads to fit them last night.

i got 4 boots. They were all size 0 b/c i measured him 2x, and that is what i kept coming up with. So i took one boot out and tried it on the front foot. (after loosening the worm clamp). did NOT fit with the pad inside, so i removed the pad and tried again. NOPE. The boots are too small for the fronts.

So i try them on the hinds and they fit. Thank goodness. ( since i tried to keep the one boot clean, but it ended up dirty anyway. I was able to keep one pair perfectly spotless for return.

So i put my old- Old Mac boots and gaitors on his front feet, and i put the pads in them. They are so clunky i just hate the old macs. We went on the ride and My horse did great. At first he hated the feeling of boots on his hinds, but once we got on the trail, he was walking out fast, and we trotted a lot and even cantered and the Edge boots did great. I think the hinds are pretty snug, b/c the pads caused them not to fit, but i might try the pads we used in the front today since they are squished down a tiny bit.

What bugs me is i need to call the company for a return # and they are closed on the weekend. So now i am not only waiting for my return, i have to wait to order the new ones.

Overall i am happy with the edge boots, but i am unhappy with the way the measuring works/does not work. Now i have to pray that the size 1 Edge boots fit him.

Nezzy - this is why its best to order through a hoof care professional. They can fit boots on and get good measurements if they have to order. Keep in mind that there is a technique to putting boots on and I’ve had people tell me “they don’t fit” but they just weren’t getting the technique right. Again, that’s why its good to work with someone. I had one lady go out and order a larger pair - on her own, without my help. Then she complained that while trotting, one of the boots flopped off and ripped off the gaiter. Ugh. I went and had a look at the boot was WAY too big.

So, are you SURE there’s just no way they fit?

My update:

Well, I rode in my new Edge boots for the first time today and I have to say I am in love! The horse goes so much better in them than Bares, even. Lots of traction, fit great, quick and easy to put on. I’ve been hearing nothing but great stuff from the people who use them, and now I can say firsthand that I have the same report to give.

i don’t think we have any reps here. There is one barefoot woman here, don’t know her name, but she sold a pair of Easyboot Gloves to someone that did not fit, they pop off every few minutes, and she sold a pair of Old Macs to another person in the barn and they did not fit, either. I told the person who bought the gloves to remeasure and order a Fit kit, but i don’t know what will happen.

Yes, i was very careful to loosen the clamp, and pull the gaiter back, and i had to pound it to get it on, then i had him step into it, but there was no way the gaiter would pull up over his heel. I tried a few times, and each time, i got his foot in, but it was obviously not fitting.

Fitting the Easyboot Edge

Can the pads be cut to make an Easyboot Edge fit better? I ask because it only seems to come in size 0 and up, while Miss Mare has tiny 00 feeties. Her friends sometimes stand too close and tear her shoes off sometimes, especially four weeks post-shoeing, and she is left with big rents in her hoof wall. She can’t manage without something on her feet. We tried the barefoot route, but the ground here is too rocky and she never gets used to it, just gets progressively more and more immobilized. She was off much of last year due to these issues. Summer is always dreadful. I want to try the boots but they won’t do much good if they’re too big and can’t be fitted to a 00 hoof.

God preserve me from OTTBs with crappy feet!

I don’t think our farrier is going to be much help with this process.

another update

i got my new Easy boot Edge in the next size up for my horses front feet. The hinds are in size 0 which did not fit him in the front, so i got the Size 1 for him and prayed. i used a baggy and then placed cardboard under the foot so the boot could not touch dirt. i was so paranoid to get the boot dirty. But it fit. Yay!

The insoles i used last weekend in my old Old Mac boots which he had on his fronts. This allowed the insole( 12 mm) to be slightly smooshed down. I then got them home and washed them, and cut a bit more around the edge of the pad. So i used them in the hind boots today and i got the boots to fit well. Then i put the newer insoles into the new boots for the front, and the hoof fit well. My only issue was hearing the rubber squeak against the hoof or against the other piece of rubber when he took his first few steps in the size 1 boots. this made me worry, but as we got onto the trail, he started stepping well and they were MUCH much nicer than the Old Macs. No clunky boot, no rubs, went thru the creek, no slipping on bridges, So far i am loving the EDGE.

My horse is still gimpy walking to the barn, and i felt so bad, but the insoles helped him a lot and with the EDGE boots, he walked out pretty fast and confidently. I think he hates the Old Macs as much as i do. i’m sure for some horses the Old Macs are fine, but not in my situation.

I might need the vet to come out and help me evaluate his feet, but on the trail with the boots, he did great.

I feel for you, but i do not think the pads will help, b/c it’s the diameter that will be the problem. You can call the company and talk to a rep, but i am guessing they will not fit. If your horse wears a horseshoe that is a size 00 then it is possible the size 0 edge would fit, but you’ll have to measure. if the feet are too small, i would not try it.

Anybody use the easyboot Edge in deep mud? I have the Gloves but they don’t fit as snug as they should. I’m going to put the power straps on, but still wondering if I should try the Edges.

I look forward to hearing the final outcome of the boot situation. I am trying to transition a few of my horses to being barefoot. I pulled the shoes on one mare and she was so sore she could barely walk. I treated her soles with venuce terpintine daily for about a week. What a difference! She is perfectly sound now and I believe I can start riding her again. I still put the VT on her feet every other day. Boots are not really an option, as to date I have never seen a Paso gait with them on. She either has to toughen up to go barefoot or go back to conventional shoes.

i use all 4 Edge boots when i ride my horse who is still having tenderness issues outside the paddock. With the 12 mm insoles, he moves great, almost better than he did with metal shoes. the insoles are what really help. We walk, trot canter and gallop in them no problem. Crossing water is fine, but they do hold a bit of moisture in the gaitors and also in the boot. if i crossed a lot of water, i’d drill some small holes in the bottom.

Easycare’s (relatively) new policy is a 30-day money back guarantee - regardless of dirt/use/wear, no questions asked. You can ride in the boots for 29 days, as long as you post mark them by Day 30 and send them back.

Really? i had no idea. I was so paranoid about this.

I think that is pretty crappy to use something for 29 days then return it.

It seems like you would know pretty quick whether or not they worked. Sound like trying to take advantage of the system.

Would love to hear more updates please!

I am finally ‘giving in’ and buying boots…
I am also torn between the Renegades, which look so easy to get on, and Easy Boot Edge - which I feel might be better due to covering a size range and his fronts aren’t exactly the same L to R.

My guy has been barefoot for years, but it is still extremely sensitive on rocky terrain. So the only time I plan to use boots is for that type of riding.
He also feels more tip-toey on the front, so I only plan to get front boots for now… keeping my fingers crossed!

I also do not believe we have a ton of dealers in our area, so I’m doing on my own/with the help of others who use shoes (for fit, etc).

any insight is greatly appreciated!

Good luck Neezy,
sounds like you are doing it right. I just ordered pads for my guy and I hope they come soon!
I think you will be very happy with the easyboots. I have only used those, but they really aren’t that clunky- with the reg easyboots I can’t even tell my horses is wearing anything.
And I haven’t had issues with the gator rubbing- but I haven’t ridden for 3 hrs straight either.

Anyone?
I’m being given a pair of size 2 Bares…but I think I still want to buy renegades or the edge since they are so much easier to get on. Just having a tought time deciding which!

Paintedtrails, if you think your horse might need pads for comfort on rocks, the Edge would be the better choice. I think you can have pads factory-installed for the Renegades, but they aren’t something you add after you get them. I use the type of leather pads farriers use rather than buying foam pads that wear out. I take the pads out once the horses are comfortable enough to do without. Others think all horses should be padded every time they wear boots. It’s a matter of personal preference.

I haven’t tried the Renegades because they don’t fit my horses’ hoof conformation (the ones I’ve tried them on). So I go with the Easyboots, which I’ve figured out how to modify to fit my horse’s feet. I know people who love the Renegades and people who don’t. It boils down to what you want to do, which boot style fits better, and the choices you make about padding.

A caution about the Edge style is that it is possible to over-tighten them. I’d make sure that I could slide a hoof pick in there once you have them snugged up. You don’t want them too loose, but I’ve heard of people marking the hoof from making them too tight. Overall, I like the design.

Thanks…I am leaning that way because I feel like they are more adjustable having a size range as opposed to just the ‘hard’ number that renegades do.
I don’t think he’ll need pads…At least I don’t plan on it. He’s very sound barefoot, just a wimp on the rocks and will avoid them by 20y if he could!
I though you only need pads for newly barefoot or bruised horses?

I only use pads on the ones who are gimpy even in boots. Others say that pads supply a slight pressure to the sole, which is healthy, and that without pads, there is “peripheral loading.” I think boots flex enough that there isn’t a problem. Others disagree.

There are some threads about padding if you do a search. You are only going to get one side of the story from me, since I only pad when the horse is gimpy on rocks with boots. As soon as the horse is comfortable without pads, I take them out.

I think the theory about always using pads holds that pad usage helps the sole to thicken. My horses step on themselves more when ridden with thick pads. It’s one of the reasons I use leather when a pad is necessary: protects from rocks while still allowing them to feel the ground. Hence, they place their feet with more precision.
