I definitely believe in the power of alfalfa for a horse with ulcers. If you can’t get the hay, consider a pellet? I’ve had great luck with the Empower Balance Topline for my ulcer-ey and hard to muscle horse. So I would stick with it if your barn will feed it.
Sam I fed the Sentinel LS for years and Love the feed. Boy has done very very well on it, but I wouldn’t really classify him as a hard keeper… I’ve only switched back to TC Senior recently because I need to reduce NSC for Boy as his neck is starting to get a bit cresty… I would start Rory on the recommended amount of the Sentinel and go from there. I think you might also see an improvement in his condition treating him for ulcers. Renew Gold is a great fat/protein supplement and is also very calorie dense… I think it’s somewhere around 1700 calories per pound, so it might make a nice top dress for him if he needs some extra calories.
But first and foremost you should make sure he has access to good quality hay at all times, not just while he’s stalled. I know this can be tough when you’re in a boarding situation.
Thanks BHK <3 The hay thing is very tough. My horses don’t go out together so I can’t even pay extra to have hay thrown in the fields until the barn decides to do it. I’m moving next weekend, so not much longer!
I’m very encouraged by all the positive responses to LS. I just have no experience with it, so glad to hear feedback here
He should do well on the LS
Hay was always a source of stress for me when I boarded. The BO and I would always have that discussion every winter. Now you would think that in your neck of the woods feeding a big TB would not be a huge mystery… up here it’s a different story. Every horse should be fat on 2 flakes hay am/pm and a scoop of sweetfeed they have a hard time wrapping their heads around how much hay a horse should eat… mine eat 2% of their body weight easy.
