Replacing a ration balancer

Did someone say that it wasn’t?

Yes, I know that. I’m not sure how that post that you replied to said that I didn’t?

These two recent replies have me confused and I think what I’m saying has been misunderstood. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough.

To summarize, horse is an easy keeper and I want to make sure he gets good nutrients. He doesn’t necessarily need calories. That’s why he was on a balancer. I used TC Balancer, but wanted to try TC Balancer Gold because I was curious about trying something without soy in it. Especially after others experienced positive results. I noticed that my horses fatty pockets reduced as a result (which is GOOD) but he seemed a bit batty.

I then wondered if an alfalfa based balancer could’ve been what was making him a bit nutty. So then I just put him on timothy pellets so he’d still get something at feed time and not make a fuss. It would also keep things simple from an ingredient standpoint, I think. Since the pellets don’t have the vit/min in them, I asked about Vermont Blend, California Trace, etc. I know of them, but hadn’t fed any of them. I mainly asked about what people chose or had experienced when feeding those, or what they’d add to the timothy pellets to get the vit/mins he’d now be missing from no longer eating the TC.

FWIW and a month late I guess but I feed the Vermont Blend Pro and like it, I do supplement with Vitamin E. Custom Equine Nutrition also does the Vermont Blend in pellets that some find easier to feed.

That’s what I ended up with. Seems to be going well. As in, he’s eating it and no negative results to report as of now.

My apologies…I’m not sure how that response went to you …I really liked the TC Gold Balancer for being soy free and containing whey protein, tummy buffer and electrolytes…but I don’t like that it’s alfalfa based and is as high in starch and sugar as it is …I have a few metabolic ones that are sensitive…if I wanted to stick with a bagged ration balancer I go with Hygain Metasafe …it’s very low starch & sugar , high fiber , and soy, alfalfa , corn , molasses , and cereal grain free with a low feed rate …or if I wanted even less calories and other ingredients than that I would do Vermont Blend Pro (or original formula if you prefer pelleted) , California Trace Plus Pellets (although they might contain alfalfa meal) or KIS Trace with a soaked base of Timothy Pellets , Timothy Balance Cubes or Pink Mash
