Side note: Kim…what would you think about using SG with casting?

Today was the first time I rode in all four feet in Easy Boot Epics with the Thinline pads (Thanks Aventura!!) And my gelding was nearly “springing” with every step. He LOVED them… the Thinlines were the key to our success. I enjoyed the first week with the Easy Boot Epics, but adding the Thinline pads made a wonderful difference!!!
I did a fresh trim on the hooves.
I used a wire brush to clean out the sole area.
I covered the entire bottom of the sole. But not the hoof wall. Basically white line to heel. Just short of the level of the hoof wall.
Another option that I have not tried to is to apply the SuperFast product in the area where a metal shoe would sit Basically making a shoe out of Superfast. Rasp to shape and then apply the sole guard inside.
I have not tried the sole guard on grass. Just mountain trails. So I have no idea if it would be more slippery. But with the hoof wall still able to take a bite of the turf, I assume you would have reasonable traction.
I did not wade any streams or rivers. But it did rain pretty hard for a day and half. So it was wet and muddy. And the soleguard stayed in.

I don’t think I would use it ChocoMare, it’s very very hard. What is your purpose?
If you are trying to build sole and/or protect a thin soled horse, I’d use Dental Impression Material, along with a thinline pad and THEN the cast
I’ll try the Sole Guard this week on my Holsteiner and see how he does. I’ve only used it on a flatter footed horses and they HATED it and it popped out asap.
The Holsteiner has great concavity so I’ll try to video the application or at least take good photos.
Regards,
I was just thinking about the folks who said that the SG was popping out way to soon, so to use casting as a way of keeping it in place.
Just thinking/asking. Thanks!
Thanks Painted! That was pretty much my plan of action, but I was having second thoughts about whether it was even worth the effort.
Here’s a pic of me on Victor. I ordered him size 5 Bares. I adjusted his trim based on what I noticed out on the trail, and the last time out he prefered gravel to grass. Still, the boots will be helpful.
