Requirements for a good hunter prospect?

Ah…but it-and withholding water/tying the head up- is lurking in the wings and one of the techniques to beat the test cited as worse then drugging in the Pro Ace camp.

Havent seen or suspected it for years but heard some questionable excuses about heads tied kind of suspiciously for long periods a time. Nothing like back when but…odd.

This stuff (and other gross activities in the name of winning) was all done back in the day. It absolutely WAS. At least in breed show circles. I wasn’t showing at USEF shows back then so I really don’t know what was being done there.

Now it’s been ages since I’ve done breed showing and I am totally out of the loop about that world. I have not seen anything quite like it in a long time doing USEF shows/ open h/j shows, but I also don’t lurk in the barns at 4am so who knows. I’ve seen some oddities more recently but usually at the end of a needle. If you can poke it into being quiet, it’s so much easier than having to go bleed it/tie it up etc.

I back up vxf111’s statements. Withholding water, tying heads up and bloodletting have all been used…but mostly in the breed circuits.

Ah yes, a thick tail. That’s one of the finer points of being a hunter in the current American ring that I forgot about. Folks hang fake tails nowadays. If you know about the Good Tail Requirement, you know more than you think about American hunters.[/QUOTE]

Someone else posted that if the horse has a thick tail, it will sell for a higher price…which prompted the OP’s comment. I disagree with that statement, BTW. Yes, a nice tail is a bonus, but fake tails are pretty easy these days, so a bad tail or even just a normal tail isn’t an issue.

It has to be big and slow. sound and kind enough to take a pounding on its back and mouth with a smile and scopey enough to jump 3’ while being morbidly obese. Bonus if good for needles

Lol sorry I’m mostly joking. Had my first rated showing experience in hunter land last year. People were generally horrendous.
