I’m assuming this is the “test the USEF is making employee and officials take” that tells them they are racists.

We all have biases. Not to recognize that is just being willfully ignorant. Understanding how biases can affect decision making is a common starting point for DEI training.

Hi @1969…to answer your first question, no, I see no difference with you being a woman. Doesn’t matter what gender we are, in my opinion, we want the same things. And in my opinion, DEI is not the way to get it. I really appreciate your explanation of the “two different organizations”. Unfortunately I believe most of the “groups” are using the DEI to change the demographcs. Won’t bore you with political examples I think demonstrate this but, suffice it to say, it is happening and USEF is falling right in line. with it. I do know what USEF is doing. I cannot agree with you on “tests of unconscious bias not calling people racists”. The way it is presented is absolutely calling them that, in mine and many others opinions… I am not sure I think “bias” is even a good word in the instance of say Judges. I believe it is more a matter of preference and there is a difference. I am not “angry” with this topic, DEI, I am saddened by it. I see it causing problems where there were none. Again in my opinion based on life experiences, history and a belief in my country. My country has worked for years to accept all, and be as one, and for me the DEI is destroying everything the good people have done. I see no need for it in our sport and no need for USEF to do somethg bad just to become “politically correct”. They can and do support numerous disadvantaged programs and they can do it without DEI committees and the imposition of insulting, hurtful, useless testing of their employees and officials. Again, in my opinion. And to reply to another persons comment, no, I do not have a narrow view of DEI. Actually, I believe you do. Again, in my opinion. Summation, I am vigorously against DEI the way it is being used, and believe it should and could be replaced with something much better. For starters, get rid of the testing of employees and officials of the USEF and get rid of the DEI committees.

Sure, there is a difference and as long as those are all allowable it’s fine. Judging in many cases is subjective, and if there isn’t a scoring rubric for the various faults, it is just a preference. Does a hunter judge consider the rider’s weight, height, breeches color? Are they fair reasons to discount a rider in an otherwise good round? What about horse color? Is that fair/allowable?

But bias is also real, and also co-exists with “preference” - but judges have to be as free from bias as possible. DEI training is one of the ways to help a judge know whether they have a ‘preference’ or a ‘bias.’

Why would any judge be afraid of finding out if they have a bias? We all have them.

Sorry, while we may be working towards it, this is currently not reality. I am in the mid-west - where at a game for the state basketball tournament this year, 2023, in the locker room, swastikas and the N word were used as graffiti in the visiting team locker room. This is but one incident.
