Retraining my Standardbred for dressage

I would strongly recommend that you give the horse a few months off to let down fully from racing. He is likely sore throughout his body and with some time off, will feel much better.

After that, take it slow. Learning to move with weight on his back is like nothing he’s done before. Treat him like you would an unstarted young horse.

I disagree. STBs especially thrive in a program. I’m not saying ride the snot out of him but really some light ring work is a breeze compared to how they train.

I normally give them about a week off and have the chiropractor out to adjust them. Then listen to the chiropractor as to if they feel they need more time off than that. These horses are used to jogging 8 to 15 miles a day and really tend to get depressed when they are out of a program. I always start off slowly. Mostly walking and getting out so they can figure out how to carry weight but them doing something is always better than time off with these horses.

OK, have my picture just trying to upload it to my profile… but its coming!

okie, got it posted as my profile pic. Just him hanging out on the cross ties so hes not really standing his best he was busy staring at a girl…

He is a very nice looking boy. Have fun with him.

I still take him and jog him occasionally, he gets jealous when I take his daughter out to train a mile, and he just loves to race, I wish I could have given him one more year at the track, but I was worried about an old injury that flared up after his last start, and he really is a warrior so even though he took an off step in his last race he still held out and brought home a check. So I’m still transitioning him to being a riding horse, he is quite FAT now, so hes getting there. lol

He is handsome!
