Yeah, it’s too late to get a cover crop going, so I would just leave the crop residue in place until you can work the soil in the spring. When converting soy fields, we were able to just do a light till, or you might be able to just drill-seed without any tilling. Your county’s extension office, or the co-op where you’ll be buying seed, will have good local advice on timing.
