The interview may have been longer and edited. It is a very interesting story that demonstrates the pitfalls in the owner-rider relationship. Of course, we don’t know all of the details.
It costs far more than this to support a horse at that level.
The qualification process (European tour) plus the travel to the Olympics is a 6-figure endeavor.
Honestly, if I had the disposable income, I would LOVE to do this. Help support a rider I like, cheer on a horse I love that I couldn’t get that far, and if all goes well maybe have a really nice horse to play around on in the end.
There are actually some people local to me that bred and co-owned an eventer that went to the Olympics. Local lady got him going under saddle, and now he’s home and retired (and super sweet! I just adore him). They seemed to really enjoy the whole process.
Probably I simply made a wild guess…. I am for sure not in the situation to know
Well they bred the horse so somehow this does sound like an enjoyable situation .
Actually did not breed Sensation, He was sold to them by Irene Wiederhold, owner of Horses Worldwide.
I think @Manni01 was referring to the Olympic event horse that @TwiSedai mentioned as living near her with the people that bred it.
The older I become, the more I enjoy watching my small part-share of a top horse going cross country under a world-class rider. I know that I’m never going to be more than pretty average in the saddle so I live vicariously.
Well the more I read about everybody enjoying to sponsor a professional to support him to go to the Olympics… I really like it there seem to be a lot of kind people.
But I do have the feeling the owners of SenSation FOB are different. She is an active rider herself so having the choice going a long way to 2028 (which contains a lot of risks and no guarantees that the horse will go to the Olympics… )and stopping it now and enjoy the horse herself, it looks like she was thinking more about her personal enjoyment (and honestly I do understand her!!). I would never go the long way either. Nobody knows what will happen in 4 years.and she seems to be far away from Florida so she can’t even see her horse everyday…
I think it is great the owner is getting to ride her own fabulous horse. I am sure he will be pampered and treasured and loved, and that is all any horse in the world really wants in life.
There is a vibe in this thread that I don’t care for. Middle aged women are allowed to ride their nice horses they bought themselves guilt-free. No-one rocks up to my house and demands to live in it because they could remodel it (at my cost) and make it worth more- why are horses any different? The horse assuredly won’t mind.
Plus, it costs an absolute fortune to have a horse competing like that, especially on a 5 year timeline. The owners have said nothing but nice things about Laura, anything else is speculation.
