So I should probably get it I think. It is an 86 selling for $1200. Is that reasonable? It is in usable condition. I need to go look at it, but it is about three hours away.
Rice trailers
I know this is an old thread, but I know of a Rice trailer for sale and I am intrigued. It says it is an 86, 7’ tall. I guess the thing that gets me is it just has one small window in the front. Seems like it would be dark and scary inside?? I am looking for something for my 16 hh mare, mostly local shows every once in a while.
I have an 87 that is 7 ft tall. Awesome trailer. Never fishtails ever. Easy to pull. Lightweight. My horse gets right in. Looks through that one front window. It has a full size escape door for the person. If I stop for food, I open it so she can look out of the door too. I pull it with the smallest Lexus SUV. The surge brakes are great and I have never been pushed. My husband did not want me to buy a truck or have anything fitted with a brake box etc. This was the cheapest and easiest way for me to go. Trailer weighs about 1650lbs. I haul a 16.1 TB and all of my stuff for eventing in it. I’ve had it 2 or 3 years.
I may have it up for sale soon since my mom may buy a newer brenderup. I live in Ohio. Mine doesn’t have a tack compartment, so I have one of those Burlingham saddle boxes on wheels in it. That functions as my tack compartment.
Does anyone know if Rice ever made a trailer over 7ft tall? I’d like something 7’4 or taller as I haul heavy hunters that are 17h+ on occasion. I have borrowed a friend’s Rice and I love it, but I wonder if there is such as a thing as a rice over 7ft tall? If they were never made then I won’t bother looking.
Just a heads up for anyone buying a Rice used - the surge brakes can be hard to find parts for. Many people opt to replace the surge (also known as hydrolic brakes) with electric, but the axels are missing a mounting bracket so either one must be designed, or the axles need replaces. This can make them very expensive if the original brakes need any work. I got a quote for axles and electric brakes for $2500 for an old Rice, but that was from a trailer dealer that is known to be expensive.
40 + year old rice, cany you help?
It’s actually Richardson Rice (if you want to google it) and they’re pretty common over here and still made. They’re pretty good though quite heavy. But with your great gas guzzling vehicles over there that’s unlikely to be a difficulty at all. For sure they last forever. I’ve an old one that must be 40 years old now and it’s still serviceable and usable.
Better quality and with the same rear load and front unload arrangement though is Ifor WIlliams
p.s. Here’s the link to the web site for Rice Trailers:
