Riding in Jeans?

I am a jeans girl. I’ve been doing CTR’s and LD’s for several years now with close to 500 competitive miles. I ride in Wrangler Aura’s, love 'em. The only time I chafed was when it started raining on mile one of 30 miles and never stopped. I have considered many times switching to a jeans style breeches but just haven’t made that leap yet. And yes, I do all my distance in a western saddle (though it is synthetic) I will say, that this: http://store.runningbear.com/catalog/display.php?cartid=5757734fb7d50&zid=1&lid=1&cat=3&scat=295 was a game changer. I LOVE mine- yes it’s a little pricey, but mine is in great shape after years of riding, heat, rain, sweat, etc. Not sure if this helps to prevent chafing on me or not- but it definitely makes the ride more comfy!

A full sheepskin cuts the slip factor and increases the comfort factor remarkably!

I love my ovation denim breeches. Stretchy denim and very comfortable. I ridden for hours in them with no problem.

Update:

First off, I wanted to say that I went ahead and added a fleece cover for my saddle which significantly improved chafing that I was having. I also determined that my apparel needs to change according to what I’m doing; trail riding vs. endurance training/conditioning/riding. I ultimately decided that if I am going at a 7-8mph trot that I need to have a helmet on, need to have tights or breeches on. If I am going for a leisurely trail ride at a walk I’m comfortable in a ball cap and jeans.

I have Equissentials French terry bootcut jods with trail patches (from knee to ankle), and love them. Not too hot in summer, with lots of stretch to them. If I were to be riding in dense brush, I’d prefer chaps, but it has been years since I’ve had to do that so my chaps remain stored in my truck, unworn.

It’s summer- have you considered a sheepskin on your saddle and going in running shorts? No chafe (honest, I rode all of Tevis in running shorts and sneakers), plus it’s super quick to pee on the trail dressed that way.

Glad you sorted out the jeans/breeches issue.

Now read Courtney King-Dye’s story and please re-think the ball cap.

If you wear shorts be sure you won’t have to go thru any briars or thick brush.

Terri of Running Bear has wonderful endurance type attire - if she carries it, then it is worth buying for your short and long distance riding.

You do want to rethink your use of a ball cap during your hacks. Just get used to wearing a helmet, everytime, all the time, when you are exposed on top of a tall, moving object that doesn’t have a roll cage. I know a helmet isn’t as comfy or airy as a cloth cap - trust me, I’ve been riding my new 5 year old Decade Team prospect in this horrendous VA humidity and I am dripping sweat under my well vented helmet all the time - but…it is your noggin you have to protect. It took a really bad concussion - two actually: one off a horse (refusal at a hunt fence while out hacking), the other being hit by a car while I was riding my bike to a friend’s place - to convince me (in my carefree 20s) that a helmet was smarter than a bandana …or nothing.

I rethunk the helmet-less hack thing after I was fallen on by a horse twice in a year. Walking + spook + slippery grass
Trotting + trip + clunk
Now it’s helmet very damn time.

Yes! I have actually! I currently have one of the endurance fit sheepskin covers, and would eventually like to purchase one that covers western fenders as well. I just have to be careful where I ride in shorts, the only reason I ever wear half chaps is so I don’t get pricked by cactus in my area lol

Glad you are finding what works and enjoying your rides.

Just a reminder…Helmet every ride.

I’ve been looking for the Ariat REAL Riding Jeans. So when I test them out I will be sure to let everyone know. I’ve considered wearing panty hose under my jeans for doing an LD. Thanks everyone for your input![/QUOTE]

The wranglers on the aforementioned 6 day ride said they wore panty hose under their jeans to prevent chafing.

As someone mentioned there are denim jods and also denim breeches. As someone who was a lifer in the real of wearing jeans. Once I got used to breeches I don’t know why I didn’t switch sooner and that was over 20 years ago! My first pair of denim breeches were those Millers Denim breeches. Anyone remember those?
