Riding on blood thinners

I am currently on low dose aspirin for seropositivity for triple positive antiphospholipid syndrome. I have had no clinical manifestations/clotting events to my knowledge (possible a couple past “anxiety attacks” that maybe were something else).

My heme/onc was going to start me on one of the heavier drugs, but decided since I haven’t had any documented clinical events, the aspirin was the best place to start.

I still do everything like normal would but have times where I’m more prone to bruising. I do wear special pants when I do Charlie’s hoof trimming though, my shins are bony and that does help minimize bruising.

I started on Eliquis in April. Plan was 3 months, but I’m on for 6 instead. I made a deal with my PCP that I would be careful and always wear a helmet (I do anyway). I shared that I also added a vest and she was thrilled. Her sister rides so she told me that telling me not to ride/work with horses would be useless, but being cautious would be something I might agree to.

Having said that, I’ve only been on a handful of times. My horse has had a year off and trying to restart him has been rough. Add in a mini with a million health issues has taken all my energy.

Hopefully, I’ll be off soon. That said, I’ve had aching/bruising in my left calf, the opposite side where I had my massive DVT and I’m not sure if it’s just a bruise or something. I only had pain last time (no bruising) and I’m on thinners so who knows… I’m only still on the eliquis because my pulmonologist is over cautious. My hematologist was fine with me stopping when I saw him last month…

I was on a blood thinner for six months after a heart attack and subsequent stent procedure. Kept riding but just walk/trot and made sure my instructor knew about the meds. Doctor didn’t object.

My son (story above) will also be on Coumadin for the rest of his life. Two mechanical valves rule out anything else. The at home INR machine makes monitoring his levels so much easier!

During Covid, though, my test strips were coming out of Greece. I thought that was a bit odd. Lately, Ive been able to locally source. them.

I have been reading this thread out of general interest as I’ve never had a clot or been on blood thinners, Well, that all changed. I was diagnosed with a clot in my leg yesterday, and have now joined Team Eliquis. I don’t ride any more and I can only walk with heavy duty pain meds on board right now, but I was happy when they told me yesterday that I could go back to riding my trike as soon as pain levels allow.
