Riding with a driving rein

As a not-proud member of the stiff elbow club, I find it very useful. Just rode for about half my ride using this technique today, and it particularly helps me follow the horse at the canter, and not stiffen and unintentionally pull back.

I agree it takes a great deal of core strength and also mental awareness, to use the technique correctly, so it’s good for keeping me sharp and thinking through the entire ride.

My current instructor has me jumping using a driving rein. I checked with an Eventing TD. There is no rule against using a driving rein in competition, either.

As a Combined Driver getting ready to go Advanced, the overhand or driving rein is perfectly acceptable and not relegated to plow horses in 1872. We use it for the same reason you would riding, and I won the 2018 North American Intermediate Single Pony Championship Driving dressage “overhand”.

Auchenbach ( or a variation) is generally used for four in hands and for performing those movements in the intermediate or advanced tests which require the reins in one hand. Five movements in the advanced test in either collected or extended trot.

I do switch back to “riding” grip for marathon and cones.

PegasusMom - I like “overhand” as the term! I admit have not met anyone who uses it in competitive driving nor advocates for it, but you’ve got a lot more experience than I do.
