Rita Mae Brown's "Sister Jane" mysteries

LOVE RMB!!

I am sitting here with a cup of tea just getting ready to crack open “Fox Tracks” which I just bought yesterday.

I like them except for the fact that they make me start thinking about hunting and it just does not work for me schedule wise. :frowning:

Huge fan. Keep waiting for more since I’ve read them all!

Love them! I started a thread similar to this one last year I think LOL. I read them all, thanks for reminding me there is a new one out.

Agree with the criticisms above but love them just the same. In fact I became so enchanted with the whole world she created, it started me considering moving back down that way when I near retirement. I went to college in Lynchburg so not totally unfamiliar with area. May end up below Roanoke… will be looking for land close to or adjoining an active hunt!

I loved the first three, and the Sneaky Pie books, but the ones that have come out in the last few years have been way too preachy. I no longer find them fun to read.

A friend and I just went from Florida to KY on a Foxhunting Trip. I ordered the 2 Rita Mae Brown books that I could find on CD and listened to them on our 11+ hour trips up and back…Very entertaining, and got us even more in the mood to hunt.
I seldom have time to read a book, I’m lucky to get my magazines read, so wish more books were put on CD for my hunting road trips!

Ok, just now finished Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. I like this one, like it a lot! Message received obviously about “preachiness,” didn’t see much of that at all in here. Plot centers around TB bloodlines going way, way back and the fact that in any era human nature hasn’t changed all that much. The writing early in the book was a little choppy, gave me the impression some editor told her to dumb it down a bit for the non-horsey. But the story took off a few chapters in and was in full cry by the book’s middle–fans will not be disappointed.

Lots of character development here for Sister and Gray’s relationship, Tootie’s foxhunting education, and the cross-town rivalry with Crawford Howard’s “outlaw” pack. The hunting descriptions are outstanding, I honestly felt like I was there right down to the sleet running down my neck and my old saddle creaking! The landscape and ambiance of all her fixtures are described beautifully, and I love the names–“Pattypan Forge,” “Old Paradise,” “Close Shave” and the rest.

Not as much meaningful conversation among the hounds and horses this time, which I missed a bit; but several of the foxes were outstanding! One thing to watch out for, any “new” character in RMB’s books is more than likely to be the one “offed” in the Jefferson Hunt country.

Extra points for the 94-year old Daniella; I grew up with someone EXACTLY like her and she took no prisoners either!

For undemanding pure hedonistic reading, this is definitely a fun entry.

COTH’s own Kryswyn is featured in a few of the Sister Jane novels :)[/QUOTE]

OMG I HOPE NOT ONE OF THE MURDERERS!! OR ONE OF THE GHOSTS ON HANGMAN’S RIDGE!!!

I hate driving without audio books; I feel like I’m wasting good book time.

I have only read the first of RMB’s series. Now I must download the others. I have not heard of Gordon Grand, but I suspect I will be downloading (or ordering) his books this evening. I absolutely loved Jan Neuharth’s series. I’ve emailed her asking for more!

d’oh!

Found a bit of brain-lock in LSDL

(Also, convincing evidence that I am a geek.)

*** spolier alert***Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings

There are no walking, talking trees in the Harry Potter series. Just the Whomping Willow, who whomps, not walks. The walking trees, the Ents, are in Lord of the Rings.

Hopefully, this won’t ruin your enjoyment of any of the books.

My Gordon Grand came last week but haven’t had a chance to dive in yet.

Thanks for reminding me of RMB. Read some of her books 30 years ago and forgot all about them. Now that I have more time on my hands I will have to get some of her books. I know they will cheer me up and take my mind off things.
