Rubber mats for center aisle?

I have a concrete aisle and ended up covering it with rubber mats. If I was starting from scratch, I’d do a concrete aisle with a lip or edge that mats fit into. My mats do shift because of the way my aisle is but I still love having the entire aisle done in rubber mats. Much safer and quieter than concrete.

The rubber mats I used have a raised pattern and I have never had a horse slip on them.

Before I had the rubber mats, I had a loose horse trot into the barn aisle, slip and fall - she fractured her coffin bone. I didn’t like the concrete prior to that and bought rubber mats as soon as I could after that accident.

We did concrete in the 24’ tack room, feed room, office and treatment/wash stall. The cost was significant!! Not just the material, but the men to “work it” so it was perfectly flat and smooth. The rest of the center aisle was gravel base with fine stone dust and mats on top!! It was very satisfactory IMO. I don’t like horses moving on plain concrete!! They can and do slip!![/QUOTE]

We did basically the same thing! Concrete tack room (mine is 12x12), wash rack, and palpation stocks, then road base packed and rolled, then dropped mats on top of it. We scored all the concrete to make it rough and less slippery. Works great, and WAY less expensive then concrete.
