I guess it depends on the horses. My horses have had only electric fencing for over 10 years. They are very respectful of it, but will get within about a foot of it. That creates the space you want between horses. But if you plan on running a boarding facility, or having regular horse turnover, it may not be the best since new horses may react differently. Although I don’t love the look of electric fencing, I have grown to appreciate how easy it is to work with. I love that I can just take it down if I need to get the truck into a small pen, etc.
Your poor pony
The Welsh pony I learned to ride on was the official fence tester at the barn where I took lessons. All the horses would watch carefully as the pony approached the electric fence meant to keep the equines out of the lawn area around the trainer’s home. No shoving was required.
Pony would touch the fence with a whisker – if the charger wasn’t turned on, pony would push through the fence, immediately followed by the horses, and fun would be had by all.
You must live somewhere that pipe for pipe fencing is easily available.
In my part of the world, building a fence out of pipe would be astronomically expensive.
I can buy pipe panels, which even properly secured do not last well.
I don’t know anyone who has pipe fencing other than pipe panels, so if it is easily available around here, no one seems to be buying it.
I wish it was available here… at a usable price.
I am installing Buckley Fencing, which is metal slat fencing and the slats fit in rubber grommets. One of my horses will have a double sized run and we will run hot wire on the top of his, mostly because he likes to take things apart. We are going to run hot wire on top of all the fence with a splitter so that I can turn off the electric to the other stalls and keep his on. When I was bidding the fence project, I looked at Continuous Pipe Fencing (these are panels that fit into each other and they weld it in. The fence posts parts are set in concrete. It was 1/3 cheaper than the Buckley.
he took the abuse of the horses with a calmness, he lived to be about 45. He had one favorite who he would hang out with who did keep an eye out protecting him from the others
