Runners vs. Riders

Hi there COTHers,
I’ve posted a blog today about my experiences watching the riders and runners at the Vermont 100. Please let me know what you think. Here’s a link to the article:

You endurance athletes are amazing!

Great read, Elizabeth!

The Old Dominion 100 Mile Endurance Ride (began in 1974) became a horse/human Race/Run in 1979 - for a photo of a 1979 rider and runner check out http://olddominionrides.org/history.html ). I’ve been riding Endurance for 9 years; don’t run however, even though hubby and I have volunteered at the Massanutten Mountain 100 mile ultramarathon (used to be part of the Old Dominion until the race/run split in about 1995 due to the trail being too crowded).

People think endurance riders are crazy, but I’m convinced the runners hold that trophy!

I don’t remember a runner at the Tevis Cup - I remember the first “Levi Ride and Tie” race sometime back then, where you were supposed to share the horse in relay fashion. IIRC there were problems with it, a couple of horses didn’t do too well, and it morphed into a team endurance race with both (all three to be picky) partners doing what they did best.

Still pretty cool, hats off to everybody with the fortitude to do it.

Riders/Runners

I’ve read accounts of the Massanutten Mountain, it sounds unreal!!! Volunteering at these events is a real eye opener to the human psyche
