Sad news - GA breeder Barbara Pappas has passed away

The loss of Barbara

I was lucky enough to know Barbara ever since I can remember. I lived across the street in El Centro, Ca and was best friends with both Mark & Pam. When Andy came along he was like our own real play doll. This was a part of her life way before she got with the horsey set. I started riding when I was about 10 so whenever we got together after she moved east we always had lots to talk about. After reading all the blogs I see that Barbara was just the same back then. I really considered her my second mom. I think I spent every Friday nite in there home. I will never forget driving in the old Chevy up to San Diego to take Pam to Batton competitions. It was such a long drive back then but always an adventure with Barbara. She taught us how to cook, sew & clean. One vivid memory I have was at Christmas, she bought me some beautiful red organza material and helped me make a Christmas apron for my mom with lots of lace. I remember being so excited to give it to mom as it was the first time I could give a present to my mom all on my own.
I was lucky to spent a couple of days with Barbara in San Diego last year. Unfortunately it was to celebrate the life of Nick Pappas, but what a great wake it was. Nicki I was so glad to see you again all grown up and to meet your husband. Andy I still remember your great oatmeal. Mark I am sorry I didn’t get to see you, but please call if you are ever in Yuma. Pam you are my sister and know how much you will miss your mom.
I will never forget your mom’s beautiful face and her infectious laugh.
Love to all
Judy

Barbara Pappas

We will celebrate my Mom’s life on the 21st of Feb on her farm. I don’t have more details just yet. We are currently discussing with a close family friend who is involved in the Nort Georgia horse scene as to what would be the best way to find prospective buyers for most of her horses. Some of the older ones will stay in the family as they have earned the right to stay family members. Thank You All !

Can I just say that this is one of the best quotes and most heartwarming things I have heard on this BB? I am so glad to know that whiel the family might not be “horsey” they at least acknowledge the older horses and their past services to the family. Esp in this scary economy!!

Again, I am so sorry for your loss. Barbara was a great lady and will be sorely missed.

Thank you, Mark, for the info about the memorial service. Thank you, also, for taking care of Barbara’s horses. I know she had some beloved older mares and she will surely rest easier knowing they will remain in the family.

This winter I purchased a lovely Hanoverian mare that turned out to be one of Barbara’s homebreds, a lovely mare by Paparrazo that she foaled in 2004. Maybe the “flower attacking” filly mentioned in this thread… I love this mare so much, and am so absolutely grateful for Barbara’s vision and dedication to her horses. My mare may have her chestnut mare moments, but she is so incredibly kind and loving that I know Barbara must have loved her and spent a lot of loving time with her as a filly. I cannot tell you how appreciative I am that Barbara planned for her, so that I could enjoy her so much now.

I’m sorry that Barbara isn’t with us now, I would have loved to tell her all about her grown up filly and given her big hugs of thanks for breeding her.

I also want to extend my gratitude out to Barbara’s fellow breeders, who are planning, agonizing, spending uncountable hours and money in to producing the next generation of heart horses. Call me sentimental, but a wonderful horse will do that to you.

My sincerest condolonces to her loved ones!

When I first saw this thread just now I thought, “Now wait a minute, didn’t she pass quite awhile back?” I looked at the date of the OP, then I looked at the date of halfhalting’s post (and read her reason for posting). I wonder if Barbara isn’t smiling right about now.

I will mix it up a bit more. This lovely mare is now at my farm (that Halfhalt spoke about) and has been bred to my small pony stallion. And so it goes…we love our mares as much as Barbara did!! She can smile, knowing that this red headed beauty is royally taken care of.
