Saddle help! What might I like with a narrow-ish twist?

I have a Frank Baines that I love but that no longer loves me. For some reason, with a hip in jury in the past couple of years, I can no longer ride in this saddle. :frowning:

The only saddle I can comfortably ride in is my Cliff Barnsby Original Milton (jumping saddle). The twist is narrow enough and the seat is flat. I could probably do a bit narrower in the twist, but I once had a Rembrandt Integra that was too narrow and my seat bones didn’t make proper contact, plus the rise was too steep.

I don’t like big blocks, I like an open seat, I need a narrow(ish) twist.

The Milton fits all my horses well enough with the right padding. I think the tree points are shorter, it doesn’t have gusseted panels, and I think is felt/foam flocked, which doesn’t bother me at all.

What might I look for that would be similar? My Welsh Cob is not wide yet. She’s got decent withers and a nice place to sit. My Milton is a 4 tree, so MW I think.

I am actually familiar with that saddle and could possibly help you. I have a couple of models that spring to mine are the Black County Dante or the Adam Ellis Style. I will be driving all day to Rolex tomorrow. Feel free to call me if you want to talk about it. 612 799 3811.

Her brother is doing well in my Albion SLK which has a narrow twist and a place to sit. I’ve found Black Country, Albion SL and SLK (as well as the old Style model), and Niedersuss to work reasonably well on the Welsh Cobs. Her sire who also isn’t as wide as a lot of welsh cobs also goes well in my Albion SLK and my daughter’s Passier. The Passier is a wide tree (narrow twist) and the SLK is a MW custom fitted for his highness. Since it seems to fit his son I suspect it would likely fit his daughter. I don’t know if PFP is like her sire and brother but they also both prefer wider channels just FYI in case that helps too.

I am picky about twists and my favorite is the Custom Icon Eclipse. Even with the tree let out a little bit for my guy and his big shoulders, the super slim monoflap and sort of integrated panel don’t stretch me from the hip like a lot of saddles do.

You might also like a Neidersuss Olympik if you like a Milton.

Thanks! It looks like there are a couple different SLK models…Ultima and Europa. Do you know the difference?

Stubbens now come with a NT (narrow twist) option. If a Baines fits your horse, a Stubben may very well as well. I adore my Stubben Aramis Deluxe NT- very open seat but NT which makes it easy on the hips. Today’s Stubbens pair the tree they are known for, which fit so many horses, with much more comfortable seats than the ones I grew up riding on (ouch).

I don’t but can say that mine have been and are ultimas.

Which Baines saddle? The Pirouette/Reflex has a wider twist than the Elegance and more open in the waist for the horse. You also might like the Black Country Eden or Vinici. The Eden has a narrow twist and the Vinici has different tree and straighter longitudinally but the monoflap feels narrower than standard two flap saddles.

It is the Frank Baines Capriole. Love everything about it except the twist…which was never a problem before. :frowning:

Anyone use Pelham saddlery to sell?

In answer to both questions I always use Pelham Saddlery to sell my saddles. it may not happen quickly but they have a big inventory so they have a lot of buyers looking all the time. As for a saddle with a narrow twist and flatish seat you might try a Roosli Pilates. I had one for years, most comfortable saddle I ever rode in. If it woudl fit my current horse I would still have it! (I sold it through Pelham…)

they are slow as molasses. Takes forever to get your saddle listed on their site.

I’ve had two saddles listed with them. One they sold after about 14 months. The other one I took back and sold through Facebook after over a year. The individual who purchased the saddle from me had seen it on their website and recognized it when I posted (it was a distinct saddle and I knew it wouldn’t be easy to sell).

Facebook has a dressage saddle sales group that is most effective

Ah, but I’m not on Facebook!

What about Fine Used Saddles for consignment?

I’ve tried to go through them (Fine Used Saddles) but had been turned down. Never purchased from them either but I have tried one saddle it just didn’t fit the cob. The saddles I was trying to sell included a very good condition Albion and my really nice and in excellent condition Cardenal from the UK. I’ve had the best luck on facebook too but it doesn’t sound like that is going to help.

I’ve dealt with Patricia several times. She is picky about what she will take but she got a very good price for my saddle. For awhile she wasn’t taking consignments.

You might want to talk to Skylands, they do a brisk consignment business especially in dressage saddles.

Late to the party here but I’ve been really struggling to find a saddle wide enough for my. It horse but narrow enough in the twist for my short legs / painful hips and back. By far the most comfortable for me so far has been the Prestige D1K Zero

Anyone like Schleese? I have a friend who is selling one that was made for her pony and she’s not riding anymore…it is a Link II.
