Salt block

Ill add too that when I tried loose salt, he would get a drink and then the little wall holder would turn into a salt water pool that was terrible to clean and wasted most of the salt :joy:

He does get electrolytes in his mash year round, the amount depends on the heat.

Thanks all, I add loose salt to the mash mixture but still like to have a block around in case they want some. The block is about half gone so one of them is using it.

I use the 4 lb blocks in the stalls with these holders:

Some horses use them, some don’t.

I liked those holders for 4 pound blocks that you put on the wall. My horses liked them too - they are the perfect butt scratchers. So they ended up broken and now I have salted corroded screws in the wall sticking out that I can’t unscrew. Maybe if you put them in higher than I did mine that would work.

So now I put 4 pound blocks in small rubber feed tubs that are loose on the floor. Yes - they poop in them sometimes but you can take them outside and hose them. Yes frequently the salt gets thrown out of the tub but easily fixed. I did decide to put one of the tubs with the salt outside by the water trough. It gets overturned and I have to bring it in when it rains but that is easy to fix. And they use it more when it is next to their water and seems to encourage them to drink.

I have these small holders in the stalls for when they are used. Mine are a bit higher so are still in usable condition.
I use a grinder to take off broken screws that I can’t otherwise remove.

I used to have a salt block in a corner feeder in the shelter and each horse would take a turn at it after each meal. Then I read that loose salt is better, so I added that to the feeder. Salt block went untouched when I added loose salt, but the horses would go eat the loose salt after each meal. Now I add salt to their grain and they only occasionally go for the extra loose salt.
