I just bought a farm that used to have a nice sand outdoor arena. The previous owners let it go to grass, and I’ve been debating leaving it or killing it all and returning it to sand. I work my horses in there when it’s not wet, so so far, no ruts or holes. We mow it down as low as possible about once every two weeks. I still can’t decide what to do with it, so since it’s a fairly low priority and I don’t want the maintenance of sand, I’ll leave it grass LOL. When it’s wet outside, I just use the indoor arena or ride on the driveway.
Outdoor arenas need maintenance. Things want to grow in sunlight. You can use round-up then keep it dragged. I would love to have a “real” arena. This is mine and works for me:
