No significant rain for 3-4 weeks many places but we’ve had some spotty rain. But I don’t think even that for 2+ weeks.
Don’t know if it is my imagination in not remembering historical entry info.
Seems like I am noticing more horses/trainers in Keeneland with maybe slightly larger fields while Santa Anita is having maybe slightly smaller fields than maybe previous years??
Keeneland’s spring meet is always popular. Barns that wintered in FL come up to KY, then head back north once the Keeneland meet is over. Plus $$$.
178 deaths per 100,000 races on dirt
122 on grass
118 on synthetic
according to article link on surfaces supplied by Equibrit above.
She said non catastrophic. Unfortunately those stats you quoted are per 1000 starts not 100,000
Not sure this answered my question/thought regarding what seems to me to be more SoCal trainers in races not at the top level at Keeneland.
I get the winter migration to/from Gulfstream, really, I do
Maybe check the meet standings over the past few years.
I’m on the fridges of H/J land and racing. I watch and try to educate myself but by no means am I involved. I know people who have and do breed and train racehorses. I pick their brains but at the end of the day I don’t know much. I did have this one observation though. It’s anecdotal and by no means proof of anything. It seems to me, the people in H/J land and various other disciplines are more inclined to jump on board with osphos more than the racing folks. At least the people I know. They know about osphos but would never use it.
It seems to me the argument that trainers are using osphos, with no proof, is coming from people who live in a horse world that will try anything to win or are less judicious about trying new drugs.
Just my ignorant two cents.
Yikes, that would really be catastrophic! The 100,000 figure is correct. Here’s another link to the JC stats: www.jockeyclub.com/default.asp?section=Resources&area=10&story=1105
PB, bless your heart
I think u hit that nail on the head.
Ok maybe I thought she was quoting the wrong thing. The EID is all quoted in fatalities per 1000 starts as shown in the link you posted.
Oh my. There’s Breeding forum?? Guess I’ll never any updates. Was hard enough to find this forum.
Brigid, this is the forum skydy is talking about: https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/sport-horse-breeding
From the BH today… Scollay Outlines Bisphosphonate Concerns to KHRC
Like that they’re looking at the problem along with how to test, detect, administer, etc. Not recommended for horses under 4.
AM news today in LA announced a DA appointed task force to look into what happened, PETA has endorsed it. Whether they learn anything or not or just throw tax dollars at it remains to be seen.
Having grown up out there and been a fan of that track since sitting on Granny’s lap learning to read 5he DRF in the late 50s, thought in the back of my mind is developers have been after that property for as long as I remember, possibly with behind closed doors County support. They wanted it for that mall years ago, they were always after the Arboretum too, luxury residential and retail developments with mega tax revenue potential.
While I don’t personally think this is related to the fatality spike, it’s certainly a crack certain factions can exploit.
Gotta wonder how many tax dollars they have to throw at this wall to see what sticks…
IMO, a feel good that will be hard to come out with concrete “explanations” for what happened. Just my 2 cents.
The DA’s task force will be comprised of Deputy DAs and sworn law enforcement.
Yeah. Lawyers and cops, Point being?
I’m still waiting to see what laws are believed to have been broken…
