Say it isn't so....Inclusive on USEF Drug List
I don’t think snarking on a 17-year-old kid is really relevant for this topic. Tori is a showman and is tremendously polite.
OFFS…

Yet others have implied that she had knowledge the horse was drugged and that’s not snarking…ok.

Drugging to get through a crowded show ground?! That’s a new one…

I don’t know…I’ve had golf carts whizzing right passed me so close we could do a baton handoff. I could use a drink to get around the show grounds, why not my horse*.

*not that I would. I have a trainer for that. She gets to ride horsey first to help her settle in. #crashtestdummie

I’m sorry but if they can do Devon or WIHS… They can walk past a golf cart without drugs
It seems the claim is because USEF took so long to tell them that the first horse had tested positive that they kept feeding the stuff, and by the time they were notified that all 3 of the horses had a positive test reported, they had run out of the supplement and couldn’t test it.
The three events being discussed are those associated with:

 1. Tommy Serio
 2. Colvin/Parker
 3. Lynn Jayne

Hope that clears up the confusion.

Gabapentin is neurontin. Similar. Not exactly the same as GABA. I am guessing the extenuating circumstances for LJ were that it was vet prescribed but inadvertently not declared in advance, but I am just guessing.

Yes…and I wasn’t being serious.

(serious about almost being run over, but not serious about drugging a horse because of show traffic. My personal favorite is the golf carts driving passed the “horses only” signs with no regard at all for the sign. G’ah!)

There are circumstances that may have occurred that deserve a lesser penalty. I buy that, always have. But USEF needs to clarify them to avoid the perception of preferential treatment in this group of cases.

But we cannot excuse ignorance if we really want to clean up the sport. We are responsible for knowing what goes into our horses. If you want to use unregulated, often not properly labeled supplements? That’s on you.

In dressage, they have the concept of submission built into their judging. Horses are often dinged on the submission element. I cannot see why the tail swishing, ears pinned, etc. that is dinged in hunters would not also be dinged in dressage under submission. But dressage has addressed its subjective judging in a very formal way. I’ve not heard that drugged dressage horses was considered a huge problem in that discipline.

Perhaps hunters would benefit from having a system that is as well thought through and formalized as dressage. You still would have the issue of judges and how different ones can see different things, but you would understand the elements of a score better.

President of USHJA (Lynn Jayne) fined $4k. Good lord.
Lynn Jayne is not USHJA President. (Billy Moroney is USHJA President for Life, last I heard).

Glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid and has a different chemical structure from either gabapentin or GABA. Doesn’t mean it won’t show up on a test as GABA, though. Now, this makes me wonder…would MSG also test positive?

Google tells me that this is an equine stomach soother supplement that contains L-glutamic acid:

https://totalhealthenhance.com/equine/products/?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=55

It says “L-Glutamic Acid establishes a healthy active metabolism by converting food sugars and fat into glucose, the body’s main source of fuel.”

The scarier and more sad suspension, is the one in the posted link at beginning of thread of infractions for Randall Cates…

only DULL robotic trips win, thats why!

I just watched the pre-green finals. Any horse with any play through the lead change or ears too pricked through the corner did not place. Its sad, after all, these are the babies. Why cant the horses show they are enjoying themselves? Why cant they be real horses? As long as the horses have to be completely robotic and dull, trainers will drug them

 1. Someone help me here. I only saw two horses test positive: One at WEF in March, one at Upperville in June. Where is the third? The letter mentioned a third but quite some time ago and NOT related to this except in a possible 2nd offense type situation that increased the fine/suspension time.
Maybe there is a third positive test, for which the hearing results have not yet been published. The published results are from a hearing in March.

Too bad the horse show world has turned into such a cesspool with everyone trying to get away with drugging their horses. I know this may be a outdated concept but, if you need drugs to calm or ride your horse, maybe you are in the wrong business. Perhaps a few more lessons in actual horsemanship and riding, instead of just getting on a “relaxed” horse might be in order. I know EVERYONE does it, but it does make it right. Betsee Park - the hunter world’s little darling - now just like everyone else out there. Get ready to load up the silverware…

The vet that makes the Tranquility supplement posted this on his fb page in 2012.

As of February 22nd, GABA is considered a forbidden substance in USEF competitions. We don’t agree with this ruling, nor the fact it was put into place with no warning to those currently competing at shows. It is important to note that our product TRANQUILITY contains GABA, so it is no longer legal to show at USEF events on this supplement.

This is hilarious:

ALEXANDRIA DESIDERIO of Chester, NJ, [Tranquility Farms] violated Chapter 7, GR702.1d and GR702.1e of this Federation, in connection with the
Arabian and Half Arabian Youth National Championship Horse Show held on July 19 – 26, 2014, in that she was heard using
inappropriate language during a ribbon presentation; glared at the panel of judges; approached judges without obtaining permission
from the Steward; and verbally abused a fellow exhibitor and the exhibitor’s father.

why is this “hilarious”? Not funny at all…

can you point to where Mrs. Serio or the USEF mention a third horse? I didn’t see a 3rd horse mentioned (other than the previous infraction when a horse not in the Serios care, custody and control was tranq’d for clipping and then brought to the Serios to show) yet multiple people on this thread are indicating there is a third horse.

 1. Horse (Compass Rose) tested positive at WEF in March. Results were communicated 4 months after competition (July)
 2. Horse (Calvert) tested positive at Upperville in June. Results were communicated 2 months after competition. (Aug).

Serios contend had the first results been available sooner, the second never would’ve happened to which USEF apparently agreed.

I can only count two horses for the Serio issue. Perhaps people are being inclusive of Inclusive when they say 3 horses?

I found it funny. I also found the guy flipping the bird to a judge funny, too.

Maybe yelling at a competitor and the father isn’t so funny. Glaring at the judges is hilarious.
