I’d recommend some motion sensor lights, a dog, and a headlamp. The ones at places like REI are awesome, and have adjustable brightness levels. I much prefer headlamps over flashlights, as then both of my hands are free.

My suggestions (some more serious than others)
Get a MAG light. they can double as weapon, BUT I do know of a person who breaks them for sport…
Drink a big glass of wine before you go out. They call it liquid courage for a reason.
And take the dog. Even if Ding-Dong The Door Bell isn’t more than a pocket pup.
Aside from that, one could go the sophisticated route
and install a baby monitor.
But do install a passcode, so you don’t get hacked.
