Scary day. Vaccine reaction

Yes, the different adjuvants (the things that increase the immune response) are often the source of reactions.

Are flu/rhino really necessary? It’s a question to ask yourself

Is Strangles really necessary? Most vets I know don’t do Strangles unless the risk is very high.

My first horse had a terrible reaction, but it was a swollen neck and not wanting to drop her head to eat. We iced her neck and gave her Bute until she improved. She was miserable. Tony is fine this morning. Like it never happened.

Ours haven’t been given the Strangles vaccine for awhile. I thought that was intra-nasal, though?

I am going to double check but I think those are all required ones at my barn. I’ve gone back and forth about flu/rhino, especially with it being twice a year. If that is something I can not get, I may consider passing depending on what the vet thinks.

I seem to remember hearing somewhere that most reactions are due to the Flu/Rhino vaccine. For years I never gave it because I believe it has to be given more than twice a year to be effective, and because of the reported reactions. My current pony is vaccinated by my barn’s vet and he gave two combo shots that included flu/rhino. I’d rather do without that one.

Glad your mini donkey bounced back with no issues.

A Connemara I owned was reactive to the rabies vaccine so the vet had me dose her with banamine prior to her giving the rabies shot.

Oh no! Sorry there was a bad reaction there, glad to hear you can drop some of those going forwards. It can be a little nerve-wracking when they’re that little!
