Hello = I am going through this with my horse now. She is on zyrtec and just finishing up 2 weeks of dex. No real improvement. She has a runny nose, constantly tossing her head and snorting. She wears a fly sheet and fly mask. She is 4, just all started in April. I just ordered Spirulina for her. I was wondering if anyone had a recommended dosage for her. She is 1200 lbs. I will also try benadryl and trihyst. Would anyone have a recommended dosage for those? She has seen her vet 3x now and so I am also looking at second opinions and getting her allergy tested. Thank you
I do about a teaspoon of Spirulina once a day. I don’t think it makes a huge difference. Zyrtec helps, but since mare is starting to show I’m trying not to have to deal with it. Interestingly APF seems to be helping (2ml once a day)
Mine is 1300lbs and gets 1/4cup/day according to mad barn’s label (29.6cc x 2 = 1/4cup). Although it hasn’t been a ‘cure’ it does seem to help a fair bit. I hate the stuff (messy green powder that gets on everything*) so if I didn’t think it had effect I’d cut it out in a heartbeat.
At 1200lbs, your horse would also be in the >500kg zone so would be on the same dose as mine.
Label for dosage/weight of horse:
*I hate counting scoops so I always try to figure out if I have a scoop that will equal the total amount per day because I feed once a day and also this crap is messy so I empty the bag into a small lidded bucket and that keeps the mess down by preventing my hand touching the interior of the dang bag and getting coated every time I go for a scoop.
I think testing is definitely worth it, especially if some of the allergens end up being things you can limit exposure to, which is the best allergy defense.
I know some who have had success with allergy shots and some who have not. But you can always do the testing and then make the decision about the shots.
As for supplements, I’ve probably tried almost all of them. The two best ones i’ve found are horsetech’s Respire and ukele’s Lung EQ. The Respire is probably my favorite, but it is a powder with a strong smell, so not palatable for everyone. Lung EQ is also probably not the tastiest supplement in the world, but it’s a pelleted form with less smell. Both have spirulina in them.
