Seattle Slew line characteristics

Slew was a tremendous damline sire.

A couple people have brought up our stallion, Gatsby, whose damline descends from Seattle Slew. He truly has the most amazing temperament you could imagine, and he is absolutely gorgeous. His kids are heading in all directions, so there is a lot of versatility there! Thanks for the props JB!

AND, it seems that Gatsby is passing on those good Seattle Slew feet, which have been mentioned quite a few times here. I know the Belle mare has fantastic feet, and I’ve heard similar things from others with offspring old enough. That is a huge, huge bonus, one too often overlooked!

I’ll agree with that, both my Slew grandkids had/have GREAT feet!!

Feet can miss though. I’ve got a pair of Slew ggrandkids–through the sire’s dam. One has normal feet, but the other has low heels, flat feet, thin soles–the stereotypical TB foot. She’s never been anywhere near a racetrack and has been barefoot her whole life, with a ā€œNatural Hoofā€ nazi as her trimmer for more than four years. Her soles are so thin that she stepped on a piece of sharp gravel, pierced through the sole, and was lame for at least three months. Grandsire on the sire side is Deputy Minister, and on the bottom she has a Fappiano son and a mare by a Buckpasser son. I suspect she gets her feet from the dam side, but am not certain. She’s very much like her mother.

Sure feet can miss, just like a line that is known for crappy feet can pop out a great-footed horse

But it’s a good thing when the feet are generally of high quality that it becomes just as much a part of a line’s characteristics as ā€œthe lookā€ or ā€œthe temperamentā€ There will always be exceptions.

I vaguely remember a Slew daughter in the late 80s that, get this, was a cutting horse. Really. Can’t remember the whole story, but I think the owners were unable to get her in foal, they also owned cutting horses, so gave her a try. If I recall correctly, she was moderately successful…mean on a cow, and in a good way! She was about 15.2, dark brown. I think she was pretty good because she had a lot of try and was wicked smart.

I could completely see this with my Slew grandson. He’s got an ego the size of Texas, we call him ā€œThe Princeā€. He’s completely in charge of his realm, in a calm assertive way. Nothing intimidates him.

I knew one, a son of Seattle Slew, who was a very fancy 3’ hunter. Alas he took a lot of prep and whomever said ā€œsit still, don’t move, don’t twitch, don’t touch the face,ā€ would have done just fine on him. He was a lovely horse, and won the adult classic at WIHS one year.

I’ve known a couple Slew grandkids. Both were in the 16 + range, had been quite successful on the track, had beautiful hunter movement, but couldn’t jump a stick! I think one of them might have been decent at dressage, but her owner wanted a jumper…

They had ok temperments. Not what I want, but they weren’t mean or agressive. They both had awful feet! Don’t even think of taking the shoes off kind of feet.

With respect to this horse, the dam tail female line is La Troienne and she’s inbred to La Troienne multiple times. The sire isn’t too shabby either.

This is one of the Bucksplasher mares who was bred to Slew The Slewor?

that un has a very nice damline!

Yes she does. I’d love to see the mare.

reading this thread and have to chuckle

I am presently owned by a little (15.2) Seattle Slew-line mare
http://www.pedigreequery.com/kiss+me+scarlet
that is not only a head-turner… but a talented (and yes ā€œquirkyā€) all round mare. She can shine in the hunters or plod along lazily on a loose reign
She is temporarily a semi-retired pleasure horse until the munchkins are both in school full time.

I particularly enjoyed reading common traits:

  1. do not pick a silly fight…you will lose
  2. don’t jerk her face around-move your body!!!
*noting that she is VERY tolerant of my personal physical limitations (which throw me off-balance in the saddle)
  3. she is a snugly love-bug, but doesn’t like everyone

I wouldn’t trade her for the WORLD

Saw this thread came back up… This is my SS grandson on FaceBook… 4 now and about to start his ā€˜real’ show career!

Resurrecting this thread…

I’ve had two Houston sons who were, by far, the best horses I’ve ever sat on. My ā€œonce in a lifetimeā€ horse was one of them. ā€œQuirkyā€ didn’t even begin to describe him, but he went Fourth Level dressage and would jump around and Advanced level xc course like it was nothing.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know of any other Houston babies out there?
