I’ll offer something that does not attempt to change the way you look: just change the way you look at yourself. Turn the photo upside down and look at it again. Chances are you won’t look as bad as you think you look. All those flaws that your own brain instantly tunes into, become less obvious and distracting.It tricks your brain into just seeing the symmetries and broad strokes of the image. And here’s the key: this is how strangers will see your photo. Not literally upside down, of course, but they’re not zooming in on your defects and battle scars. They’re seeing the whole image.
I have to do this for pictures of myself quite often, to break that cycle of scanning pictures only for the defects that preoccupy me. Turns out I look pretty ok upside-down.
