Sedivet use in reining horses

It certainly tarnishes your reputation by association. I will now just assume that any horse I see competing in reining is drugged.

What a great letter! I had no idea it was also an analgesic - that just makes its allowance soooo much worse : :rage:

Yeah even the FDA label for Sedivet says so. People are arguing that the low dosage makes this a non-issue, but since we don’t have any research at that dose you cannot say for sure.

The only thing I ā€œagreeā€ with in this whole policy is that if one is going to use sedivet, you must fill out a Med report and turn into the show office before giving it or it’s considered illegal use.
Also, the rider, owner and trainer must sign off on its use. It will be interesting to see how many owners don’t know what meds their horses are getting to show or even riders for that matter.
Like I said, I still absolutely disagree with allowing sedivet but the only way I could possibly be convinced to not protest this is if it was public knowledge of what horses showed on sedivet. Right with the results, just something that indicated the horse shows under the influence.

I think it’s so important for potential buyers as well as mare owners breeding to stallions to know if a horse or stud prospect showed clean. I purposely bred to a number of studs from Europe because I know they showed clean due to their drug policy’s.

It should be listed like Lasix in racehorses. But meds report forms are not public knowledge. They’ve really screwed themselves with this.

It even got UK coverage in Horse & Hound this week, which generally doesn’t cover American sport.

NRHA has an extensive European membership, including events in the UK. 5 years ago, EU membership comprised 1/3 of the NRHA Membership. An England based show circuit dropped their NRHA approved classes after the ruling.

The EU based members of the NRHA BOD voted against the change.

@bugsynskeeter1 Thank you for that information

This is what gets me. How can we know the effects of low dosage when it has not been studied.
This whole thing is just rotten.

It was the FEI who parted ways with the NRHA.

The horse’s vet should sign off on its use too.
