Sending an OTTB to his first show... (updated w/pics & video!)
Cross your fingers - just sent our boy out on a very short trial with some Pony Club or 4H teenagers and their trainer. :)
Fingers duly crossed! Best wishes for a great match.

Hopefully you can sell him/place him easily - you are doing the right thing in getting him training and exposure.
He is a lucky boy! Very fun to see his “show” pictures.

PS
You mentioned donating him to a school - please research that carefully.
Agree. OSU for instance. Not a good record at all.

Just got an update on this guy…

[i]I expect that Olly’s rides on Saturday and Sunday(he’ll be doing 2 dressage tests each day)will be in the morning. His Sunday rides could be as early as between 8 and 9, but we will send you exact times once we get them(should be 5/18 or 5/19).

[13YO new owner] gave Olly a bath yesterday and she and [Trainer] clipped his bridle path, trimmed up wiskers, and the wayward hairs at the top of his tail yesterday. [13YO owner] said he was very good for all of it. He was a bit ticklish with trimming up around his muzzle, but nothing crazy…just tickly lip. He continues to endear himself to everyone with his personality. He very much likes being a part of things and is very curious with what everyone is doing.

Olly got to go on a “field trip” last week with [13YO owner] and several other horses to a place south of Olympia […] which is where they did some cross country schooling along with some other horses from the barn. He got to go over some baby jumps and they rode around in the open field. He thought that was pretty fun…some of the little jumps he thought were a little scarey at times, but again, he tries to figure it out and really is learning each time. Even when he isn’t “sure” he doesn’t get silly or crazy-he may get a little quick, but is so trusting and he slows back down for [13YO owner] quite nicely. It is helping build her confidence up with her knowing he is such a “fair” boy. With her other horse, she always had to be on guard and worried about what he would do when he got scared by something.

We are hoping there might be another small jump show or derby(where they do some cross country jumping out in a field on a small course and then do a little jumping in an arena)in June, but if not, then Olly and [13YO]'s next outing after the May show will be July 16 and 17[…]which would be his first event show–dressage, jumping and cross country. The kids went last year and had a good time and good experience.

We will keep you posted. I know [13YO owner] has some pictures she hopes to send you this weekend from Olly’s trip to Olympia.

[13YO owner] will be riding him over at [Trainer]'s just for fun this weekend-you are more than welcome to come by-we could set up a time if you’d like that would work for you. I am sure this is a busy time of year for you, but if you’d like to come over and see him and meet [13YO owner] etc, that would be great.
Or…we have lessons on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm…or if any other time worked and you’d like to come see him, just let me know. I am sure he’d love to see you all–and you could see his progress. I don’t remember if i told you he has a pasture buddy named Earl and they seem to be getting along fine. We do grain him separately so he doesn’t have to worry about having to “share” and he gets his feed.

what a fantastic update

I know that OTTB’s and kids can be a disaster, but this is why I am such a strong advocate for the combo. With the right kid, right horse and right situation, it can be a match made in heaven.

My OTTB that I got when I was 12 literally shaped my entire life. I thank her for it every night when I give her a peppermint before leaving the farm.

He is now an eventer and did his first show today with his new girl - jumpers! So, so proud of him! Check the start date of this thread - he had been turned out for 5 months when this thread started. He ran his last race just about a year ago. And now - isn’t he awesome and super cute?

Video:
1st class - he was the only entrant so his first ribbon was BLUE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IObok2WV9M

2nd class - he got two rounds & two ribbons as it was a fun show. 4th and 6th
