Severe thunderstorm/loud noise anxiety - Xanax?

I will reccomend the thundershirt…I am needing to get one for my border collie with a thunder phobia.

Also, have you tried any type of preventitive training on your old guy?

my other border collie, Kate, has noise phobia…when the train goes by our agility field, she got so scared, we had to STOP our course.

I started giving her REALLY good treats and acting terriably goofy and silly when the train would come by…so she started to associate “good” and “fun” things with the loud noise…and its has drasticly reduced her fear.

I try to avoid meds if possible.

What’s alprazolam (sp?) - is that xanax? (I know I should look it up but I’m inhaling my lunch before a meeting in 10 mins). We went through all the bach flower options, melatonin, dark basement w/ noisy dehumidifier, etc. and the big guns did the trick for our old lab. However – I thought read, later, after we put her to sleep, that you could get weird side effects with tramadol, which she was also on at that time. I throw that out there so you might ask your vet about the interaction of whatever you decide to use for anxiety with whatever you’re using for old-dog pain management.
