You might want to check out the labels for chemicals like sodium laurel sulfate & sodium laureth sulfate; these seep through your scalp & do bad things internally. They could be harmful to horses, as well.
I personally love the cheapo Suave shampoo + conditioner. Especially when it’s on sale for $.99 a bottle.
OMG Cai, you are a genius! Wow! What a great idea! I have Mrs. Stewarts for whitening stuff (works awesome on saddle pads!- I blind people with mine) and I never thought to make a whitening shampoo. I actually really like whitening shampoos for my chestnuts’ tail, really brings out the silver strands. I scour the dollar store for the purple shampoo but its hit or miss.
Greatest tip ever!
I’ve used generic Head & Shoulders shampoo and conditioner for years with great results. Helps with itchy tails too. I use dish soap like Ivory or Palmolive for scrubbing legs, which works great. I do use Quic Silver for socks, Micro Tek shampoo for any funk, and sometimes Vetrolin shampoo in the summer, but that’s really it for horse-specific products. My current horse is a sensitive-skinned TB, and he does just fine with this routine.
I use whatever human shampoo was a Fail for my hair.
But then, I rarely shampoo a horse unless it’s really warm out and we’re going somewhere special.
For you bluing users: be careful!
Especially if you have a gray or other light-colored horse.
A drop too much in the rinse and your horse will be pale blue for a loooooooong time

Human shampoos are made for a different PH level than equine ones, and can make the horse’s skin more at risk of getting a skin condition/infection.[/QUOTE]
I disagree on that actually… My dog, horse, and I use the same stuff
I use Suave daily shampoo, same as Janet, and he looks great. Skin is in great shape too.
I like the Dove nourishing oils conditioner for his tail though!

It’s true. Dog skin pH is roughly 7.4, human is roughly 5.2, and horses are in the 4.5-6 range according to my pharmacology final today in vet school. Horses are close-ish enough to humans that it most likely won’t cause a problem but it can cause significant issues in dogs to use a human shampoo. Best bet for canines is to use the gentlest, canine pH specific shampoo you can find. You should see the dermatological conditions that can crop up…not a pretty sight and very painful for the dogs!

Have you seen the Suave ‘professionals’ line? It’s fabulous. And comes in two scents that are TO DIE FOR. Almond and something-butter and rosemary mint. A 32oz bottle is <$3 at Wal Mart. I bought something like 6 bottles of shampoo and conditioner each, stashed some at the barn and some at home.

Is the rosemary mint a knock-off of Aveda? If so, I need to stock up because I LOVE the smell of that stuff and would love it for horsey. The mint is a bit, invigorating
I use a liquid baby body wash and a rubber curry…
Lots of suds fast, rinses very very clean and no more tears for either of us.
And designed for cooler water temps…
Not all shampoos are the same pH, which is what I was disagreeing with if you go back and review my post
Just because it is “human” or “horse” doesn’t mean the pH should automatically be assumed to be x,y,z. You need to know what you are buying, and more expensive does not mean “right” or “better”.
I love Mane and Tail. I’m a bit of a hoarder… I have a 1 gallon bottle and two regular-sized bottles of the shampoo in addition to three regular-sized bottles of conditioner. I have two horses, only one of which is bathed even semi-regularly. I really do think Mane and Tail gets the gunk out and leaves them nice and clean. Smells good, too. I use vinegar or Quic Silver on the gray when she gets disgusting (in foal and not showing, so she doesn’t have to be spotless). I love love love Vetrolin products in the summer. Wether or not it actually helps their muscles is unknown to me, but they sure do smell and look good!
A lot of black girls use nothing but horse products on their hair, including MGT, trying to grow long hair fast. I used to go to a salon and they were using Mane and Tail in the salon. They swear by it. I didn’t have the heart to say I use human stuff on my horse. Lol. Hey, to each his own.
Were they really using mane and tail in the salon!!! Thats not good…i like mane and tail…but its not a proffesional product…
Yep! It was mostly a braiding salon, but there was a stylist and they did all kinds of hair things. I was surprised too!
Oh wow…haha i work at cost cutters and we can only use and recomend what we sell…if there was anything with a horse on it id be thrilled!

Really? Because I’ve been using human shampoo on all my showhorses for 30 years and my hubby on his cutters for 35 and I’ve never had a problem like you describe. Most of my clients use human shampoo as well.
Dogs and cats are a different story but horses? meh. I suppose it’s possible but I’ve never seen it. To each her own though.

Are you my long-lost sister? I have plenty of shampoo. I love to buy different scents and try them out at home and if they don’t work there they go to the barn and if they do work then I get one for the barn too (and I do buy horse shampoo that smells good as well) Everyone at the barn knows to ask Dr G if they run out of shampoo or forget theirs at home lol.
A vote for plain Ivory
I agree with the previous poster on the Quik Black. No perceivable black enhancement, but one slightly dingy white sock! I usually just put out a bottle of Suave to share with anyone who wants it, but will splurge on Vetrolin once a summer or so. If hot and sweaty, I’m more likely to do a nice brace bath with Absorbine liniment splashed in. This thread is making me crave summer!
