Shiraz the TB

YAY omg congrats! Enjoy her! And enjoy all the new horse gear shopping - I find myself splurging every time I have something new. Maybe not smart, but it’s fun!

shes literally a dream come true

This weekend both my horses tried to get themselves killed or at least give me a heart attack. Shiraz had choke. It was dramatic; I know as emergencies go, it’s not that serious but by george was I terrified. She coughed and strained her neck and looked so miserable until the vet got there with banamine. Two hours later still no dice so the vet came back and we tubed her. Apparently she was difficult to tube - more difficult than a mini the vet had had to do that day as well, according to her - and we got that terrible grain out of her. All of this because she decided to woof up her grain that morning for no darn reason.

My other one, my old baby, got stung on the eye by a wasp and her eye blew up to a ridiculous proportion where we were worried the skin would split. Steroids and antihistamines in that one solved it- it’s still a bit swollen today but way better.

Why’d they have to do it on the same weekend? GOSH! I was planning on riding both of them, I guess they heard that and said NO WAY MOM, NO NICE AUTUMN RIDES FOR YOU!

Shiraz had to do her choke right during our lesson slot too so it’s been moved to next week. Hopefully we will be able to jump a few sticks for fun on Saturday. I’ll try to get videos. It’ll be nice to look back at what we looked like my second ever time jumping her vs this time next year.

Today I hand walked her through the trails. Tomorrow hopefully I’ll ride her for the first time since the Saturday choke incident.

This Sunday is a charity trail ride off property so I’ll update you all on that :)!

Well our charity ride went very strangely. We were fine for about a half an hour when she decided she was done and reared me off without so much as preamble. I landed under her (!!!) and she held perfectly still while I got myself out of that situation. GOOD GIRL. SO much could have gone wrong had she tried to move with my belly up in the air between her legs. I got back on and we continued until her next mini-meltdown where I got off and hand-walked her for about half an hour before getting back on again. At that point she was delightful- but had to be in the front and out-walked even our Frisian!! I was worried the whole ride she would rear me off again so I was relaxed, sure, but on high alert at the same time, but she honestly didnt put a foot wrong after that. My coach and I have both come to the conclusion she just needs to do this kind of thing more- she’d never been on a trail ride with other horses to my knowledge, never gone with me on a trail ride for that long, and hasnt been off property with me yet so considering everything i give her a solid 8/10. I have a bruised buttocks! Such is life.

We are doing well so far!! Our walk and trot is becoming quite lovely. Our canter though she needs to relax first, and frame up second: she gets so stressed off the left in the canter and we are practicing it with no inside hand and a quiet seat to get it reaaaally stretchy and caaaalm. Haven’t had the chance to jump her since our first ride together (obvs a relaxed canter would work best for that) will keep updating you. Here’s some fall photos where I inadvertently matched the trees!!!

I’ve been too chicken to hack her out since the incident haha. I’ll get over it and we will try try again.

Update for everyone:
“Raz” is doing well. We are very polite and light in the walk and trot now and are still working on relaxing a bit in the canter but it’s getting there. We’ve elected not to jump until we get our canter a bit more adjustable, but we did jump her once in december and it was glorious. she just jumps anything, any fill, even a little gate that I was a bit spooked at haha.

She suffered a kick through the fence from her neighbour, who had ice spikes in his shoes, and it left a puncture wound and a very blown up hock, but after a week of cold hosing and 4 days of bute she back to normal and as good as ever. I rode her her first time back after her injury on my birthday and though a smidgen more spooky she took having 9 days off super well.

I’m just babbling at this point but boy do i like this horse. She makes riding fun again; I feel like I did when I was 11 or 12 years old on my first horse- I want to go ride, I love the feeling of her gaits, she just lifts my spirits up and delights me.

Ill be going for surgery in June and will be unable to ride for six weeks, which pretty well obliterates my show season, but I’ll try to do a few of the later August/September shows: maybe a w/t dressage pattern or the adult w/t division I hear they’re hosting locally.

My birthday present was a DNA test for Raz to see if she really is a thoroughbred, as her papers have been mysteriously lost, no one knows her real name, she has no tattoo, no chip, and doesnt really “act like a thoroughbred”, although that isnt a fair statement: I know there are more chill thoroughbreds out there but this girl doesnt blink when the snow falls off the roof of the arena, when a plastic bag touched her leg, nothing. I either own the most chill thoroughbred in existence or shes crossed? Well anyway if she is pure tb we may be able to figure out her parents with this DNA test, and if she’s not that’ll be cool to know! It comes with a dorky certificate with her results which i’m happily going to pin to the wall at work haha.

I’ll add a few candids in my next post.

Thanks!! I feel a little bipolar: my other one isn’t doing well. I feel guilty for enjoying this horse.

Stop with the guilt, you deserve pats on the back for the way you treat your horses and patience. Shows can wait, don’t put pressure on yourself to rush that canter development relax and enjoy the slow progress as it happens.

Hello! An update on my baby girl <3
We got the DNA results back- full thoroughbred haha. this is ideal as I wanted a nice thoroughbred, they’re my favourites.
But she had no tattoo and she is chipped but it was by the last owner with no other information.
So I took to facebook and within ten hours the breeder and the lady who backed her contacted me.

All because of that distinctive ermine spot on her back hind. Thank god for that!

I now know she was bred to race but never got registered or trained because the breeder went through an expensive divorce right then. She then sat in a field until she was 5, where so was bought and backed. That’s honestly ideal for her body if you ask me!!

Her mom is Highland Twist and her dad is Yagudin. Does anyone know about either of those lines? I really dont know much except that I love her.

We’re working on our canter departure. I’d love to do some update videos and will try to convince my coach to take a few in the coming weeks.

For now BABY PHOTOS!! I’ll put them in a second post!

It’s so cool the breeder shared baby pix! There’s something about seeing them as a baby :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Congratulations on figuring it out and the baby pictures.

If anyone is interested:

Sire: Yagudin Horse Pedigree (I guessed on this - there are 3, but this was bred in Canada (2000). The other 2 were bred in Spain (2004) and Turkey (2002))

Dam: Highland Twist Horse Pedigree
