Shivers

I am going to ask this here and if I don’t get an answer I’ll start another thread.
How do you think Shivers should affect a horse’s price?
Would you BUY a horse with shivers, Big Mac not an option

Would you BUY a horse with shivers, [/QUOTE]

Not knowingly. Never again.

This horse was a rescue/adoption. I have absolutely NO regrets because I know we were brought together for a reason. That being said, I would NOT knowing buy a horse with shivers if I planned to anything other than pleasure ride.

Sorry if that’s not what you were hoping for but I’m being honest. This condition has a very unpredictable progression. It would definitely effect the sale price of a horse marketed for competition.

i have a horse with shivers hes an ex grade A international showjumper hes 26 yrs old now
as long as you know you can manage it
but also remember its a nerological problem and ot without its risks as horses with can be known to fall over at anytime when being ridden

I leased a horse that had shivers. Wasn’t really a problem undersaddle. Sometimes when we first started at the walk I would get comments from barnmates about how he was walking funny in his hind legs but that went away after a lap of walking. Probably just came from standing in the crossties while I did my loooooonnnngggg grooming process. Picking up his back feet was scary sometimes but it was best to just ask him to pick it up, lean away while his shook his leg for a bit and then he would relax. Be sure to find a very patient and understanding farrier. But also one that can get the job done quick! Nothing worse than a horse with shivers + a farrier that takes 2 hrs for each horse. We actually put my horse on a particular feed. That Progressive low carb stuff. I will find out the name of it when I go to the barn tomorrow. Something about the ingredients my vet told me helped to balance something. who knows? I will ask her again tomorrow and get back to you!

I would NEVER knowingly buy a horse with shivers. I didn’t know my Shire had shivers when I bought him 1 1/2 yrs ago, (prepurchase, etc) that being said, I have NEVER had a cooler horse! I would NOT trade him or sell him for anything, but I would not have knowingly purchased him.

I am having something up front that hopefully other shivers horse people can tell me if they have ever seen…When standing, (esp crosstied) or when sleeping … he will extend one front leg like he’s stuck, then stiffly put down, still extended and the other extends…I’ve never seen anything like it. He also has developed fatty pockets right above his shoulder on both sides???

I had a TB gelding with shivers and wouldn’t oftraded my time with for the world. No one ever noticed anything was wrong with him until he backed up or during shoeing. I didn’t have to sedate him as I had teh most patient farrier that took his time and let him get suituated before he picked up his back feet. With the EPSM diet and me asking him to backup then giving him time to do it on his terms most people never even knew anything was wrong with him. I evented, foxhunted, and showed jumpers and had offers on him everywhere I went.

him jumping - don’t yell at me about the lack of helmet I wsa young and stupid
