But they’re bigger at the top, by quite a lot 😠Do you maybe have them upside down? I can see how you could mistake them for a draft size if so, they’re very wide on that end!
I tried them both ways but the only way to get them to stay on is to put the smaller end at the bottom. The velcro on the sides doesn’t fit very well and the tops, like you say. are huge. They are very loose on the legs because the closures are for much thicker legs. I thought I was using them upside down because of the shape but that was the only way that they would stay on. But they still don’t stay on that well. Fortunately they are hot pink so I can find them in the pasture.
Yes, the smaller end is supposed to go on the bottom they’re supposed to fit very loose around the leg, and sit around the coronary band.
Here’s a pic. They’re not supposed to fit tight to the leg.

OHHH. That is how they fit. Kind of. Except they slip down over her hoof and she steps on them. If I can remember how to post a picture I will take a picture of them.
What size did you wind up buying @alfonsina ?
Got the rest of my herd in large, and they fit very nicely. Good velcro coverage for them all in that size, nice height. Think I could’ve gotten the light boned mare into large, too, and the extra height would’ve been nice. Really dragged my feet on getting these (does $50 a set just seem $$ to anyone else?) but they do seem to really work well and the horses are appreciative!
@SusanO after seeing them on my crew, surprised to hear your WB slides out of the large ones! When they come off, is the velcro all still stuck together? Any chance she’s rubbing them off?
She is keeping them on better but yesterday when the tractor guy started mowing the pasture she took off and I found one legging in the grass. I think she was going too fast to stop and pull it off. The other one on her front legs was in her stall still velcroed together. I am not sure how she gets them off but they do stay on better than when I put them on upside down. And thankfully she does not tear them up when they come off. That is pretty good for one of the Destructo Twins. I have ordered some other cheaper leggings so i will see if they work about as well as these do.
This mare has no TB blood for generations but does not have a lot of bone for her size. And she did not really need them as tall as they are. But mediums may have been too small.
I ordered the mediums but they are on backorder and haven’t arrived yet. Simkie, you were right: the first three times I measured weren’t correct it seems. At first with an old cloth measuring tape that apparently had stretched out, then by marking on a bit of flagging tape. I kept getting around 13" which didn’t seem plausible to me and why I started the thread. Finally I measured again and got around 14" , went with that and ordered. We’ll see how I did when they arrive…
I have a 14.3h QH, a 15h TBX, and a 13.2 Welsh X pony. All are in smalls. The smalls are a bit tall for the pony but fit around the bottom and the next size down was too small to even close the Velcro. They do run on the small size. I can’t account for the pony.
I can’t say I’m in love with their lack of durability. Maybe if I got a medium? Horse is 15.2 but quite lightly built with small feet (size 0). My horse has been wearing hers for a max of 4 weeks. The hind ones have had the stays wear through the fleece and she had a rub on the left hind. I pulled the hinds but left the fronts. They seem to be weathering the wear a little better. She is in a large-ish dry lot pen 24/7 and moving quite a bit but she normally isn’t hard on clothes. Not sure I am going to fork out for these next year.
Susan
Did you get those this year? Mine all have the black nylon binding at the bottom, not the fleece.
I wonder if putting gorilla tape along the bottom would work to prevent rubs, like it does with grazing muzzles.
Well mine haven’t been falling off these days but the horse still rips them off with her teeth. Not all the time. Sometimes they are still on in the morning. Luckily they are pink so they are easy to find. If they get wet she wants them off and it is raining everyday here. She hasn’t torn them up and that is saying something. Unfortunately with all the rain and wet grass the horse has gotten a repeat of a leg sore she gets in this weather. Her leg starts to itch, she gnaws on it …and there you have it - a sore. So I am putting these wraps on her over her bandages and spraying them good with fly spray. This is helping keeping her from pulling off the bandages.
Mine have the fleece at the bottom. I just got some more leggings - two different cheaper brands. I am going to try them too and see how well they stay on and if they are comparable with these more expensive leggings.
Yes, ordered them in late July from Stateline. I am going to try some tape over the stay once the rub is healed up.

I wish mine had fleece. I ordered this year and they have black nylon at the bottom. For the most part they’re okay, but my appaloosa has sensitive skin and he’s gotten rubbed from these if he wears them 24/7 for an extended period. I try to take them off daily and check to make sure he’s not getting sores. They do really help him overall though. He’s got all sorts of itchies and allergies and usually gnaws his legs until they are covered with bloody scabs in the summer, especially when the pastures get overgrown as they are now (BO out for knee replacement). These boots keep his legs much happier. He’s about 15.3-16 hands with lots of bone in his legs and wears a medium. They fit great.
