Shooting at Sacramento International Horseshow

Considering a few months ago a well known trainer - and winner of a horseman’s award - shot and killed a horse that his son was riding, there’s every reason to be concerned about horses at the showgrounds potentially being in the cross fire of a shooting.

There’s nothing about this story that would take me in another direction.

Edited to add this comment from the COTH Facebook article about the shooting:
“In Thermal California several years ago one of them [a groom] fired a gun while in a horse barn, causing the entire facility to be on lockdown until the gunman was caught.”

Thank you to those who provided GoFundMe links. My husband is a groom and it’s nice to see the community rallying for the people who make our dreams happen and who work tirelessly to take care of our equine partners.

I often use the fb comments of COTH articles to make a mental note of who I won’t do business with in the equestrian community. Normally, it’s the comments on Safe Sport news.

Some people drive either stolen vehicles or vehicles with stolen plates. Even more common in the type of person who feels the answer to a fight at a soccer game is to go home and get a gun and come back and shoot people.

So getting the plate number was great, but that does not mean it leads directly to the shooter.

I know you weren’t asking me, but I did “love” that comment because I agree.

I am fortunate that I am in a business where I can choose who I do business with/associate with. My business is not directly horse related, but intertwines heavily with equestrians.

I wouldn’t say I select who I do business with based on political views, but if they are outwardly racist on FB, especially toward Mexicans which my husband and daughter are, then yes I would certainly choose to never do business with them. And that could easily be a $20k+ paycheck for me.

I understand what you’re saying. I also have a business that I can choose who I do business with.
So far, I haven’t turned a client, or potential client, away because of their political beliefs. I don’t believe I would, but one never knows. As for them being racist, I wouldn’t have a way of knowing if they are.
But it can go both ways, and I wonder if any one isn’t doing business with me because of my political beliefs.

Quite honestly, as I am sure the other side of the political spectrum feels about me, I am fine if people choose not to do business with me because of my political beliefs.

What I think is incredibly frustrating about this incident and the subsequent conversation in the FB comments on the Chronicle’s page, is every single person commenting has benefited or currently benefits from the labor of the race of those involved.

Much like Lou Dobbs touting his anti-immigration stance while actively employing non-citizens so he can pay them less for his daughter to show at the top levels of the sport.

There is a difference between “political beliefs” and blatant racism. I do not care at all if someone I do business with has a different opinion from mine regarding tax policy, transportation regulations, etc. I care a great deal if they make heinous remarks about human beings based on nothing more than skin color, national origin, etc. Especially human beings that they personally employ.

Why did Dale Harvey post that photo on FB…the sheriff posted that they’re not interested in him,
yet comments are reacting as if the man is guilty.

One of the victims is starting to lawyer up. This tragic incident is about to get more complicated.

The victim’s livelihood has been severely affected. He may, or may not, ever be able to work again.
The attorney will want to find someone responsible, within civil law.
