I drive down from MD a few times a year and my loop is Middleburg Tack 1st…then straight up to HayMarket…while yes it’s hot you will find Fox Hunting clothes and a really large selection in terms of size and quantity. Prices are more than fair and if you buy a lot don t be shy and ask if you can get a discount for quantity…
They will have tweeds and blacks …maybe not a fancy selection of different tweeds but acceptable serviceable ones…Boot stick to MTEX …also they roll,up,the carpet early in Middlevurg so go at doors open , plus you wil,get a better parking spot and Bathrooms are at a premium…use one in Middleburg Supermarket!
OMG great advice when are you going this summer? Lets do a trip…
Red Fox came up as one of the possible B&Bs, I gave the hubby some options and am waiting for him to pick. If they have parking for guests that might bump it up on the list it seems.
I’m not opposed to a secret COTH meetup, our target weekend is the first weekend in August.
The hubby will probably be hiding in the dressing room while trying on breeches though as he’s never worn any. I have a feeling we’re going to do more shopping then sight seeing, he needs everything except possibly a new helmet. I will be looking for the coveted brown field boots and impulse buys!

The town built a public restroom facility, so you don’t have to use the Safeway’s bathroom anymore.
The Red Fox has a guest parking lot behind the building.
My DH would live at the Red Fox if I let him. He loves the history of the place, and the food’s good, too.
Just tell your husband what mine told me: Breeches aren’t that much different from football pants, and they’re not even as tight!
Love the way the foxhunting clothing thread, of course, turns to food!!! Bit surprised that identifying and purchasing the proper flask hasn’t come up.
Advice, to join the very excellent advice you’re already received:
-
If you haven’t already, do check with your Masters to be sure you are getting the right attire for your husband to wear with TVH at the meet you plan to attend;
-
Consider calling each of these stores ahead of time, with your husband and a measuring tape standing by. The old school world of personal contact and human communication still endures in both Middleburg and Warrenton (Horse Country).
-
Don’t miss the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg. If it’s not open, at least pause at its version of the sculpture memorializing the equines killed in the Civil War, which stands outside the Museum and Library. Quite moving, and as long as you’re in Virginia, appreciate Virginians’ love for the horse

PHOTOS!!!
I hope you and your husband enjoy many seasons of sport together.

TVH is great as they post their formal attire(we’re going for opening weekend) on their website. Carla was also really helpful with all my questions last year, I think she’ll be so proud I’ve learned to tie my own stock for this year so that will be one less guest who’s stock she needs to tie.
As far as flask I’ve got one I can put in a pocket (didn’t think to bring it last year) and I’ll have to see what is available for real hunt flasks, I’m missing a D ring on the cantle of the saddle I’m planning on taking again this year.
Even knowing my own sizes I never get measurements right, and one thing I’ve learned is there is no consistency in women’s jacket sizes, not sure about men’s. Even if we only come back with a partial wardrobe and some real sizing information I’ll consider it access and I’ll have 3 more months to finish the missing pieces.
The library and museum sound fun, I’m leaning on staying more towards Middleburg and that would give us a better shot of getting there.
Do photos from last year count? I know we’ll take more this year!

Just an update from day 1-
Melton, vest, stock and breeches and a saddle from Middleburg tack exchange. Everyone was so nice.
Lunch at the Red Fox, Mac and cheese was really good.
Day 2 will start with the Old Dominion trail ride with Hunter’s Rest, then we’ll hit Tri-County and the Saddlery Liquidators in Haymarket. Will go back through the thread as we drive about for other stops.

Update on her update ^^^
Letitbe and Mr. Letitbe did GREAT on the ride this morning!
Mr. Letitbe drew the long straw out of my horse-herd (beloved Remus) and he was GREAT, in fact, had to take over and be our leader when my 3yo blew a fuse early in the ride! He was great and I believe had a great time.
Letitbe did great too. Her long straw draw (X) had a front shoe off this morning so I swapped her to a much greener, much more-horse horse, but she rides quite well and once they both listened intently when I assured them my hunters need-no-leg (a la schoolies in an arena that need you driving them every step with your calf!) the young horse was quite pleasant and gave her a lovely ride.
And, to cap it off, after a bit my 3yo took a chill pill and she, too, was good.
I’ll let Letitbe recount the briefly exciting moment with the flock of turkeys and the wholly terrifying situation with the deer that jumped my horse’s nose then stopped in the middle of our group and began kicking out.

Hehe its not just schoolies that need a ton of leg, maybe its just the ones I buy/train as it’s definitely my preference for sure. Iron was a sweetheart once we figured each other out and Remus was a foxhunting saint to match my retired show hunter and Hubby had a great time on Remus!
So now to the tale…
After a change of course we had some new leaders (with the hubby in 3rd or 4th place) and we were about at the crest of a hill when a turkey flushed and flew into the trees. The lead horse spun out from his rider and as we’re sitting there thinking how lucky we were to only have one on the ground who needed to be remounted a deer leaps out of the woods and dashes into the middle of the group and starts bucking and kicking out for what seemed like minutes but was only seconds. I thought for sure someone was going to be kicked as it was spinning and just letting loose before it finally ran off. I think timing wise that’s when the second turkey flushed out on us. Luckily no more riders came off which I think was a true testament to the quality of horses and riders in the group (Hubby on the saintly Remus did great!).
After the rider re-mounted and we started to move off WaterGlen’s mare did encounter an Anaconda but that’s for her to tell:)

Shopping update day 2:)
After leaving the nice members of Old Dominion we headed off to shop.
Helmet purchased from Saddlery Liquidators. (I got a new show shirt and my first white gloves for dressage and a pretty shipping halter for my Connemara)
Boots ordered and a second pair of breeches(would have got them at Middleburg Tack Exchange but it was more an after thought that he’d need 2 pairs) - Dover Saddlery in Chantilly. Anna was great even calling other stores (not just other Dover’s but called Saddlery Liquidators and Tri-County to see if they had boots in the needed size in stock). (I got another matching coat, boot and helmet bag and fell in love with a short Pikeur dressage coat which actually fit better then any of the traditional coats but didn’t buy it)
Stopped at Tri-County which was a very nice store but didn’t have the needed sizes. Quick bite to eat at El Agave across the street.
Shirt and gloves purchased at Horse Country!
So unless anyone notices anything missing all he needs is a stock pin which I can get locally!!!
I could so live in Virginia if it wasn’t for the cold.

If you’re still in town and you’re not planning on eating at the Hunter’s Head in Upperville, you’re wrong!
Congrats on the haul, but now I’m hungry for an Angus burger at the Pub.
Wow! Sounds like quite an exciting hack! I’ve met Iron but not ridden him, but I’m still jealous. He seemed like a very nice horse. I’m quite certain I’d have been one of the riders on the ground…good for all of you for staying on!

Back in South Florida and at work unfortunately. I don’t think we ever hit Upperville despite driving every which way.

And just a follow up with another Anna from Dover Saddlery in Chantilly is awesome post!!!
The boots came today and they fit him!!! Tomorrow Mr. LetItBe is going to try the new saddle and then on Sunday we’ll add boots and breeches into the equation once we know saddle fits and is staying otherwise we’ll ship it back tomorrow.
