Show Hunters of the past

One thing that was certain, even with the iffy footing, bad trailers, lack of knowledge, many of these horses showed happily on into their 20’s - perhaps because they got the winters off? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Harry I think that’s at least part of the equation. Where I live now the A show season runs from May to August and many people stay in state. At my barn the horses get excellent care, but nothing overly agressive (i.e., hocks are not done unless indicated, no magnetic blankets, etc.). We have many happy old campaigners who show up into their 20’s, and the ponies under twenty are considered adolescent. The kids are also helping with the show set-up and doing their own grooming…right out of the '70s.

Funny Thing I saw on E-Bay
Someone has a National Horse Show Catalogue from 1975 on there,When you look at the ad there is a pic of a horse jumping a Mercedes for Benzel-Busch Motor Cars…That is Kim Benzel, and I’d like to say Third of August…Not 100% sure, but sure looks like her…Nice Horse

If memory serves me, Best Bet was Susie Hutchinson’s junior hunter. And a GREAT one.

Offset. Was it Eartha Quake or Take Five?

Who remembers when Kenny Wheeler himself showed Gozzi?

Offset, don’t insult The Spam.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Mr. Neilsen and his son, both unassuming stand up people.

I sure do remember Kenny on Gozzi. He’d come out of the ring and say, “he went good, he sure went good” in his southern drawl!

For an East Coast- West Coast RIDER, who remembers Susie Schroer? I heard she became a professional in CA. Is she still doing that? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Yes. One of the best trainers in CA!

Jimmy Lee’s Sketiton. Marianne Steiert rode him then. Is she still riding, anyone know?

Annie Deveroux. Adorable, small brown horse. Beautiful face.

bekkaRAE1017, welcome, we may very well need someone to man the paddles - you have joined a very senior group.

Mr. Campanini is the reason Frank and I became such good friends. He came from MN, where he was owned by Hans Senn, and he was shown by Debbie Napier as a jumper (open, if I recall correctly). I took care of him there and fell in love with him. I don’t remember how he came east, but I was at a show out here shortly after I moved out here, and lo and behold, there is “my” horse in front of me, led by a curly headed kid with a big nose (sorry, Frank!) We became fast friends and I was Campy’s biggest fan.

Kind of the same way Lord Help Us and I hooked up - over a former MN horse, also a superstar hunter, Valor!

Joan Boyce’s Numbers was a terrific little working horse, who went to CA and continued his winning ways as a reg. and ammy hunter. LHU has elaborated on his CA career on the “other” thread.

I’ll also cast my vote for the best hunter riders: Leslie, Katie, Joan, Jane, RJ, and Charlie. No one today could touch their talent on a hunter, IMO.

What a great name!!!

Sir Thompson

I think your feelings and mine are quite the same, he was here in Connecticut briefly, I didn’t warm up to him.

BH1…Soupy’s tail?!

I often wonder if the stars of the Sixties, early Seventies would be winners today.

Anyone remember Ninth Wave?

You all need to get back to work, here. More names. Owners and riders when possible!

Okay…BH’s you’ll remember this for me…What was the rider’s name [NOT a southern McKinney], pretty girl, rode at FCHC I think as a junior, that became a top skier and was on some talk shows?

Wow, as a kid I had a book that I loved, which included photos of Scotch Tweed/Brooke Hodgson, Greg Best riding a pony (I think it was Grey Goose), Conrad winning the Medal, Leslie winning the Maclay, and many others from “back in the day.” I wonder if I still have that book anywhere… </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Was it Snowgoose that Greg rode?
