Show me your tack room!

We finished our tack room a couple of years ago and we have been really happy with it. This was built in a 200 year old bank barn and my husband is a carpenter so he has quite a bit of knowledge on renovations (thank goodness as I have no idea. I’m just the grunt lol!).

He built a frame underneath the tack room to keep it off the ground. Its 8’ x 12’ as we didn’t need anything too large since its a private farm and its just our 4 ponies (no boarder here ever! And he wanted to keep it plywood sizing). The floor was spray foamed and so were the outside walls as we wanted to keep our harness and tack as mould free as possible and to keep the temperature stable as well. We did add a heater for the winter so the temps didn’t fluctuate too much - this has worked really well for us.

The walls are tounge and groove pine and the ceiling is drywalled and painted. The back has 4 cupboards which hold my clippers, grooming totes, extra halters and lead ropes, lunge lines, extra bits and theres a nice saddle pad rack in the back where I can lay them out on to dry and it keeps them hidden. The last cupboard is split into 4 sections and holds clean show sheets for each of the ponies. I don’t keep any dirty items in there. My day to day blankets are hung up on the wall in my feed room.

He built a saddle rack as well for some of my saddles and nice bridle racks for my bridles (how did I get so many bridles??). We did add blinds to the window as I didn’t want the sun shining on my tack and fading the black harness and the floors are all a plastic laminate. We went with a lighter colour to hide dirt/mud (this was not my favourite colour by any means, but it really does hide the dirt and it looks like old barn boards). The sink is nice and handy to clean my tack with afterwards.

This has worked really well for us, but it would be too small if we wanted to keep all of our blankets in there or if we had boarders. What are your plans? Is it for a boarding barn or just you?

DiamondJubilee - your tack room is beautiful!

I like the paneling. A light color definitely helps brighten up the room. I’d go with a light gray color for me, to better hide any dust!

I’m loving this thread. Just a dreamer myself, but some day…

DiamondJubilee, your tack room is gorgeous!

Simkie, I like the white paneling too, but I think I would go with a creamy white, not a totally stark white, and perhaps do a bit of a distressed pattern since it is a tack room and metal and leather will be banging into the walls. I googled how to paint a distressed look in white and the Images tab brought up a whole array of looks from very lightly distressed to deeply marked and scraped. I was thinking of a light distress like in these two pieces of furniture:

…something just enough to disquise an occasional nick or mark but still keep that fresh white look.

My tack room is maybe 10 x 12 feet, walls are the smooth side of plywood, without a stain or sealant. DH built three shelves along the wall to the left of the door, blanket racks on the next wall, saddle racks along the back wall, and to the right of the door - a long row of heavy wooden pegs high on the wall where I keep all kinds of tack, bridle bags, miscellaneous stuff vaguely organized, with a shelf over the pegs. I have a folding metal saddle rack that I keep the saddle du jour on, a tack hook hanging from the middle of the ceiling with a small chest near it to hold cleaning supplies.

If I were starting over, I’d use items from Schneider’s Easy Up Line. I like the looks of the swing-arm pad/blanket rack.

Some pretty nice looking tack rooms. I won’t post any pictures of mine it’s a disaster cluttered mess of bridles saddles, pads & blankets.

Neat!

For those still wondering about flooring, do check into the new elastomer paints for concrete floors.
They started being used in garages and basements, you may have seen them as epoxy speckled garage floors.
They have really pretty ones in all colors and designs now that are used in commercial buildings, some in churches, etc.

A friend that is an architect told me they are entering the residential market also, with great success.
They fill so much we want in floors, non slip, softer than other but still firm, super easy to clean, deter mold growth as in plain concrete, wood or carpets, etc.

We may use that in our tack room floor yet, just looking into it.

I can’t post mine…it demonstrates my inability to not have triplicate of everything as you can never have enough pads, bridles, bits, flymasks…I have a whole 16 x 18 room FULL of shelves and supplies. Just in case. Moving to a new barn next month, so maybe once the move is over I will finally take a picture!

No this is how it was before I started collecting more tack and misc. Now it is full of shelves.

OMG thanks for this! My new house is wall-to-wall white tile and I hate it. I never would have thought of painting it!

This is stunning… you’re making me rethink not putting a finished floor in mine - I’m so heartened that your beautiful room is only 8x112

Im in the same boat. My tackroom was never set up properly and recently had a bad leak fixed so this is the perfect opportunity to redo it.

I have no idea how to lay it out but thesr pics help! Fortunately its larger, about 13x20

Very inspiring, @DiamondJubilee . Thanks for sharing pics.

I can’t tell for sure from the photo, but that may be vertical tongue-and-groove boards instead of paneling.

What other options are there for interior walls in tack rooms? I need to finish mine this year.

(LOL just realized a link spammer resurrected an old thread. Reported. But I am still interested in what to put on interior tack room walls!)

I did cream beadboard paneling in my tack room, which is about the same size and likewise has a window across from the door. My picture files are too large to post here but you can see them on the blog I wrote during the renovation of our barn. https://hedgerow-farm.com/

Ha, old thread!

My tack room is still unfinished and is currently full of crap. Really needs help  Keeps getting bumped down the project list. One day it’ll be nice!

Do any of you combine tack and feed in one space?
