Sleigh driving

GTD, THANK YOU! I’ve dreamed of it since I was a child, and your video is probably the closest to sleighing as I will ever come in NC. I felt like I was there in the sleigh with you. And your region of N. VA is just gorgeous - the perfect place for sleighing! My DD used to live in South Riding and I love that N. area. What a great guy Little Andy was. I liked at the end when you said to say hello to the camera - he shook his head and said, “No!” LOL! I am so very sorry for your great loss.

I don’t know how I missed it last winter, but I’ve already saved your vid for the coming winter (along with CA’s wonderful Moses Cone drive). I hope you don’t have those blizzards again. My DD got buried in Vienna with almost 3’ of snow.

Yip

Don’t forget that Brakes on a carriage are not for stopping. Rather they’re to keep the weight of the vehicle back off the horses and for such as going down hill.

On a sledge the vehicle would still continue forward.[/QUOTE]

Curious, Thomas, the different terminology between the Queen;s English and good ole American English. Here a sledge is a heavy drag vehicle on wide boards with a flat surface on it for hauling hay out to cows in the winter or for hauling stones out of a feild. Some folks use them to teach a horse to pull --another common term is dray or stoneboat.

When we say sleigh here it conjurs Currier and Ives like photos in our minds or scenes from the musicals of the 30s and 40 where starts like Bing Crosby and Danny Kay rode in a sleigh in movies like White Christmas. Or perhaps Judy Garland movies of the era. Very light vehicles like the cutters talked about above. and always pulled by a gray horse for some reason.

Funny that.

What do you call the thing that kids get on to slide down a snowy hill on? Not skies, but something with runners and a surface. No horse drawn.

Weeeeeeeeeee! We did it, we went sleighing! It was a bit too warm and the snow was heavy and wet, but we did it! Not for long because it was such hard work, but man…it was SO FUN!!!

Looks like you had a blast - and so did the dog. That snow is DEEP! Whew! But…where were the jingle bells??
